How come Cantori is not in the keys

#1 Postby jes » Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:09 pm

It doesn't seem right not watching him on the beach interviewing the residents. I wonder if he'll go to the gulf coast later or was Katrina enough for one season.

He likely would be killed if Rita bombed. Don't wanna take any risks maybe.

Not really if you just use a bit of common sense and stay on higher ground. I know a few chasers who live in the area and will more then likely ride it out on Key West on a rooftop or in a parking garage. Then again, its there jobs basically. I'd urge all residents to get out though.

Because he's not a very good swimmer?

This is just me speaking, but all those Keys residents who disdain evacuating for any hurricane, what are you going to do if there isn't anything above water, break out the scuba gear?

Let's give him a break. He had a very challenging assignment during Katrina. Would you want to jump back into that? I've had my fill of just preparing for Rita and I'm looking for a vacation after this.

I believe rooftop and or parking garage is higher ground. Trust me, he's scoped out the area for years waiting until a big one was coming. I dont think this will be a big one for the keys, but worse than Georges in 98'. Same cant be said for Texas though, could be quite nasty.

I'm sure many can no longer share their experiences with the higher ground they scoped out prior to Katrina.

I agree with you that this won't be the big one for the Keys. However when it does come most of those who think they've found "higher ground" in the Keys won't be sharing their experiences either.

The only high ground in Key West is atop the Holliday Inn on Duval St and that is in a pot a palm tree is planted in (nice place to watch the sun set other than Malory Square BTW). You would have to be a fool to stay in the keys for a major hurricane.......MGC

They will probably send him to Texas or LA for landfall.

This is what one Keys resident not leaving says, in answer to your question...(off of stormcarib.com)

Fwd: [HURR] - Rita
From: Sanibelsunlover at aol.com
Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 22:05:39 EDT
This is Jan, reporting from Marathon, Fl. We are waiting,,,just waiting for tropical (?) hurricane Rita to hit us. As of the latest update from intellicast, we will be very close to the eye of the storm. Right now the shutters are in place, the wind is starting to howl & my Ron is taking a nap for he is exhausted from all the preperations for the storm to come. We have a trimaran which is roped off in the middle of the canal. Ron has positioned the boat fairly close to the seawall just in cast we have to get aboard in order to survive the storm. We are only 2 property lots from the open Atlantic so we expect the worst. Because of the full moon & the high tides it has been predicted that the storm surge will reach 7 to 10 ft. above sea level. We are 4 ft. above,,,,which is actually quite good for the Keys. I have life jackets here in the living room, just in case we need them tomorrow or Tuesday. Hopefully not. Many will wonder why we don't leave. It is very hard to get out of the Keys. There is only 2 lanes,,,,1 in & 1 out & if we would get caught enroute it would be much worse than staying put. There are too many people here. The development is terrible. Way too many people for an easy evacuation. We laugh when they talked about a warning system in case there were a tsuname. How in the world could all these people get out in 20 min. or so??? Anyway, we just wait & see what tomorrow brings. I'll keep you posted.
Jan,,,,from Marathon, Florida

I thought I heard him and his crew had a very close call with their lives while covering Katrina. Didn't hear any details though. Anyone have any info on that?

He and his crew had quite a ride.

Mrs. Cantore called a radio station here in Atlanta right after Katrina when a couple of DJ's were talking about him and his crew being caught in the storm...and she was very NOT amused at his near death experience.

I somehow suspect she's reigning in Mr. Cantore. ;)

I hope Katrina was a wakeup call for Cantore and Anderson Cooper and all those other TV mets and/or talking heads who think they need to stand outside in a hurricane to one-up each other.

It's ridiculous. I wish they'd stop. Set up a few well protected remote cams and leave it at that.
