Rita Center on NWS Miami Radar

#1 Postby gatorcane » Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:49 pm

A center is starting to show just SSE of Andros. It looks like the center is wobbling NNW though  Please confirm what I am seeing:

How many times must we go through the fact that long range 248nm radar is very inaccurate when tracking the movememnt of a storm?

I don't think that's the center because they had the center 120 miles SSW of Nassau. What were looking at is due south of Nassau on the 11pm advisory.

It doesnt matter. If we're looking more than the typical 124nm range on radar, its giving you a false perception. The long range is not good for tracking a storm. Its OK for an overview of whats happening, but not recommended for plotting its movememnt.

It's like trying to move your head one direction but having your body move another direction...see what I mean?

Don't forget that the cone is ONLY where the center might be! But so far, it does look okay for S. FL, and not so much for the Keys. Long as it stays on the current track, anyway. Still, it won't be a walk in the park for S. FL, either.

Yeah, they took dade and broward totally out of the "cone", but left the hurricane warning on for dade.

I think the NHC has a pretty good handle on this storm in the short term(72 hrs). It seems to be dead on track.

Sitting here at work. watching the radar loop with an outter band getting ready to come into Miami-Dade, it should be here within 1/2 hr. Usually power goes out here, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
