Flying from Houston to Miami today -- HELP!

#1 Postby KLP124 » Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:34 am

My friend lives in the Keys and she's staying with me right now. She's SUPPOSED to fly out of Houston tonight at 6:54 and get to Miami at 10 pm something. Any idea how we should handle this? I'm not that familiar with airline policies, etc. Will they wait and see how Miami fairs before cancelling flights? Will they re-book or will she just have to hang out at the airport for hours?

I live about 2 hours from the airport -- that's why I'm trying to work out the logistics early.

Check with the airline. They make the ultimate desicion whether to fly or not. The Miami Airport yesterday said they would close with sustained winds of 50 mph. Still, check with the airline.

I work for the FAA so I've seen situations like this before but that does not mean I know exactly what an airline might do. I'm assuming the flight is on Continental, and a quick check of their web site shows no current cancellations into Miami.

Rita is passing due south of Miami at this time, since the flight is not leaving for another 12 hours plus about 3 hours flight time that give you about 15 hours. By that time Rita should be well to the southwest of Miami. I wouldn't expect any problems other than maybe a bumpy ride in south FLorida.

Yeah, the other factor is that we're making evacuation preparations here... what timing!

We've decided that Rita is following her so we're thinking we should ship her somewhere else. Any takers? :)

Thanks for the info!

Check the airline's website. That is the best way to find timely information of flight delays and cancellations. Most airlines seem to be sayign that they expect only minimal impacts from all Florida airports except for Key West.
