Can Rita out run the ridge?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Can Rita out run the ridge?

#1 Postby SWLA » Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:16 pm

Okay. Right now Rita is being guided west by a ridge to the north of her.
I am hearing that the ridge will be expanding westward. Is it possible for
Rita to accelerate to fast and get on the west side of the ridge causing her
to turn north sooner?

Well, according to this, it's still pushing west into New Mexico.

At least that is what it is forecast to do. It has not moved and looking with my untrained eye, it does appear to be building ever so slightly west near the NM/AZ border.

I guess many of us don't understand the dynamics of a Ridge. I thought the same thing with Katrina, the Ridge was moving west. Indeed the Ridge axis was moving west, however the Ridge was weakening at the same time.
