Have we learned nothing from Katrina?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Have we learned nothing from Katrina?

#1 Postby damicatz » Tue Sep 20, 2005 1:40 pm

I just saw a report on CNN from Key West, Florida. During the report there was no less than :

6 people walking around
2 people walking their dogs
A person on a scooter
5 riding bikes
5 non-emergency vehicles

When they interviewed one of the people walking their dogs why they were doing so in the hurricane, they said it was because it was boring inside the house. People are going to be wishing they evacuated, mark my words.

There have been some gusty winds and squalls through there but it is nothing like what happened with Katrina. I don't blame them for being outside...I'm bored sitting here at home too. Nothing is open, we haven't had rain in a couple of hours, and the wind we have isn't that bad. It's this kind of storm that keeps us S. Floridians from preparing and evacuating a lot of the time. There was so much media (I hate to use it, but it's the only word) hype before this storm hit that it's almost a letdown. Yes, I know that there is some damage around, and yes, I know it's better that it went to the south, but when a storm gets hyped this much locally, stores and counties shut down, etc. you would expect more, IMO.

Yeah we are getting squals... and isolated tornados... BUT

This storm is not as bad for anywhere from the central florida area, to the keys as Katrina was. NO sustained winds of severe strength... Luckily it stayed to our south.

I just went to mcdonalds earlier.... They have stayed open 24hr by my house. Even through some of the bad squals. 7-11 is open, but most everything is closed.

And yet when we talked about this being overhyped in S. Fl a lot of us got flamed for it. I suppose it always could have blown up or moved north to be directly over Key West, but it was not predicted to do so and didn't.
