Local station Beaumont area

#1 Postby raynpa » Tue Sep 20, 2005 5:06 pm

Rita is forecasted to become a category 4 at landfall near Freeport Saturday. The upper high in the deep south still the key for Rita's future track. Water vapor shows the high very slowly moving northwest out of the area. Our weather will go down hill beginning Friday. With a category 4 near Freeport (100 miles away) we could see Hurricane force winds and a storm surge around 10 feet Friday night and Saturday.....Stay tuned!

that is scary....

I would go with NHC, instead of a Beaumont TV station "met".

Be careful, one of them is a regular visitor here and well respected.

This Cat4/Freeport thing is coming out of all the media outlets now. I wonder if it's a foreboding of the next NHC advisory.

I don't think his forecast isn't valid just because he/she didn't read it word for word from the NHC website. What did he say that was so outlandish that made you feel like you should come on here and question his qualifications as a "met"?

I think local mets have responsibilities to the public to relay facts from NHC, its ok to speculate, but to say its coming to Freeport, when NHC has it over a 100 miles away is not doing anybody anygood.

Let him come on here and post the disclaimer like everyone else. I only have my local "mets" to use as reference and they are nothing more than network lackeys, IMO. This is the time to report facts, and the NHC is the authority on that. We have to post a disclaimer, but these guys (whose audiences are much larger than ours) can say whatever they want.

I'm sure it's not fair to paint such a broad brush, but I cant stand to turn on my TV right now.

No offense intended.

Based on what I have seen from the mets on this channel, they apparently have some very good reasoning to make the statements made on their website.

Who did? The met raynpa referred to said near Freeport, which by the way, is just over 50 miles away, not over 100 miles away like you incorrectly stated.

Someone made a thread sharing info from her local weather met. Why does this bother you anyway? I can't help but notice that you do a lot of nitpicking at other's posts. I'm not quite sure why.

I used to have a client in Freeport. Made the trip from Houston a couple times a week. Back then there wasn't a whole lot between there and Houston but I imagine things have changed in 20 years. I used to pass Compaq headquarters to get down there. That was a big new building. HP bought them since then. My client was Intermedics, the pacemaker company. I am not sure what happened to them, either. They moved from Freeport up to Angleton, I believe.

I remember Freeport, Lake Jackson, Clute, Angleton, and then a whole lot of empty fields before Houston.

I think it was Clute that had the annual Mosquito festival. I remember the giant mosquito by the side of the road.

Great seafood down that way. Also a lot of little clusters of extreme poverty. Hope everyone down there is able to get out of Rita's way.
