Severe storms could strike KY this wkend

#1 Postby therock1811 » Fri May 16, 2003 3:49 pm

Severe wx is possible in Kentucky this weekend from a weather system currently in the Southern plains. Check regularly for updates, as this situation sets up for the weekend!

Right now, the NWS only has 40% POP's for the wkend, but I say more like 60%. Not too optimistic am I? Well, I like rain sometimes, but I haven't seen enough sun lately.

Yeah... I will. The WW is only south of me, but I'll be on the watchout nonetheless.

Jeremy, you are only 30 miles north of the northern edge of this Tornado Watch. I would consider that "in and close to the watch area." -- wouldn't you?

This is true... altho the NWS says nothing about severe wx in their forecast for Florence. Like I said, I'll be watching nonetheless.

Tornado watch 406 has been cancelled as of 540pm. However, a Severe t-storm watch is in effect for SE KY until 10pm. Here are the details:

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 410
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
540 PM EDT SAT MAY 17 2003

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

SOUTHEAST KENTUCKY
FAR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
EASTERN TENNESSEE
FAR SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA

EFFECTIVE THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 540 PM UNTIL
1000 PM EDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS ALONG AND 70 STATUTE MILES
EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 55 MILES NORTH NORTHWEST OF BRISTOL
TENNESSEE TO 55 MILES SOUTH OF KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE.

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING
WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE
WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY DO PRODUCE
TORNADOES.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...THIS SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH REPLACES
TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 404...TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 406. WATCH NUMBER
404 406 WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT AFTER 540 PM EDT. CONTINUE...WW
405...WW 407...WW 408...WW 409...

DISCUSSION...LINE OF STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUES EWD INTO
ERN TN AND SERN KY ATTM. AIR MASS AHEAD OF THIS LINE IS MODERATELY
UNSTABLE AS SURFACE TEMPERATURES HAVE WARMED INTO THE LOWER 70S AND
DEW POINTS REMAIN AOA 60F. THOUGH SHEAR WILL SUPPORT A FEW ROTATING
UPDRAFTS...LINEAR NATURE OF THE ACTIVITY SHOULD MAINTAIN PRIMARY
THREAT OF DAMAGING WINDS AND ISOLATED LARGE HAIL.
This is the watch as written by SPC. The watch is 170 miles south so it will not affect me.

Looks like the worst is south of me... but I will not rule out thunderstorms with some severe weather here in the north. Looking really closely at the image... there appears to be a cluster of heavy rain WSW of Louisville, Kentucky. No word which direction it was moving at the time this image was taken, but will check shortly.

Okay... looks like this is all pivoting, if you will, toward the north. So some of that heavy activity south of here is going to move in here in the next couple hours.
