What do you do
When your friend from when you were 4 is staying because his parents think they will be fine 2 streets away from the water.. Knowing its horrible how can i convince them to get the hell out?

if they can't be convinced to go due to life threatening conditions, paint the picture of life in galveston bay area with 98 degree heat and no electricity and potable water for a week minimum! after alicia, we had no power at my folks house for over 2 wks! MISERY to the 100th power. Tell them to enjoy.

well, the only thing i can tell you is to remind them about what happened durring Katrina. i live on the MS gulf coast. Katrina proved that a surge can even hit places that aren't in flood zones. there were places in the 200+ mph camille that didn't flood that flooded during katrina and killed people. just try your best with them.

Present them with the Post Katrina "I Stayed Anyway" Hurricane Supply Kit:
- 1 large Sharpie for marking their names and address on their limbs so they can be identified when found floating a mile away or attached to a tree like ghoulish Christmas ornaments
- 1 hatchet for them to chop their way out of the attic with
- 3 courtesy body bags so the emergency personnel won't have to use their own
- The number of some counselors who specialize in post-traumatic stress disorder so that if they do survive, they'll survive that survival.

I am a firm believer in doggie downers in the tea with a rubber mallet at the ready...toss them into the car and deal with the consequences when they wake safely somewhere else!
I have friends in the NO area who stayed (they wanted to evacuate) because one family member is agoraphobic. The above was my suggestion, as heartless as it seems

Actually you can't even say that. If they survive then they think they can survive anything and will possibly be more likely to stay. It has happened that way in my family.
All you can do is your best to try to get anyone out who wants to get out and leave a satellite phone with anyone who is staying so they can contact you after
those dang phones are worth the $800 if lines are down and towers are down

My parents sent my grandmother up to Dallas with a bunch of important stuff. My dad trimmed a bunch of the branches of the trees around our house, so that if anything falls, it'll have to be the whole tree. Apparently our house in the Southwest part of Houston didn't do to well in Alicia. But my parents are staying. I'm dead scared right now for them. They've been told by the police in our area to prepare for no power for at least a week to two and the police suggested leaving, but they don't want to. We'll see.

I do not think he will do that. He will not leave his mother and sister behind. I'm planning to walk over tommrow and explain to his parents the consequences if they stay..
If you are unable to convince them this morning, you might try this. Go to your friend and hug and kiss him goodbye in front of his parents and then go to his parents and sister and do the same thing. Tell them you love them and will miss them.
Maybe it will shock them into believing. If it doesn't - you will know you have tried your best and have said your goodbyes. After that, all you can do is pray. Good luck.

You know, somebody in Houston should QUICKLY record a couple of public service announcements with some Katrina refugees who decided to stay - they could make the point much more forcefully. They could simply not use it if it isn't necessary.
They should plan an "excursion" for a couple of days somewhere interesting, maybe to San Antonio, for example (if that's safe). If there's no hit, they can easily return.
Can the father be appealed to via guilt in his role as paterfamilias - "it's your responsibility to take care of your wife?"
I think air conditioning can be a huge argument. I am in the northeast, and virtually never use it, but the number of people who tell me, "I can't function without AC" is vast, and it's kind of astonishing to see the number of people who won't turn it off even to sit in a chair, sip a cool drink, and read a book, but are convinced they will be doing heavy debris and house cleaning without it! As them when the last time was that they've had AC off for a week.
