Season of the Century - It's really happening isn't it...

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Season of the Century - It's really happening isn't it...

#1 Postby SamSagnella » Tue Sep 20, 2005 11:29 pm

Has anyone else been spending the last few weeks or months in a meteorological daze? I mean, first off, we had like 5 named systems by the middle of July, which set off some bells and whistles in my head for SURE. Second, Hurricane Katrina -- the long-awaited-worst-case-scenario-that-we-hoped-wouldn't-happen-in-our-lifetime-but-it-did storm -- which decimated a prominant southern city and brough a proud nation to its knees. The fact that this had been seen as a disaster in the making for DECADES, and it finally happened has rocked my weather world. Now, on September 21, we face Rita, the seventeen named storm of 2005 - did I mention that it was september 21? The fact that we're even entertaining the possibility of it exceeding the 175mph beast that was Katrina is nightmarish. The fourth most populous city in America in its path? My God, when will it end?

On the other hand, this year has been a meteorological candy shop. I've learned more about tropical cyclone forecasting this year than I have in the past two combined. While I pray that the rest of the season behaves itself, its terrifyingly possible that it won't.

EDIT: i wont change the title of this thread again... lol

My mom was seeing my tracking map, and she told me, when Dennis happened?

So many storms that the first ones have been forgotten.

Worst part: maybe NOT the season of the century. Conditions have NOT been optimal for hurricanes - there's been strong shear in the mid-Atlantic. SSTs will be like this for years, and there's a good chance one of them will have the magic combination of favorable wind conditions and be even WORSE.

Then there's global warming. According to estimates of warning the last couple years will be typical of LOW points in the Atlantic cycle. Bad years - no way to know how bad - but a good rough estimate would be this year with everything cranked up 1 1/2 categories.

Americans are going to need to make like a frat pledge and start memorizing the Greek alphabet.

It might be more like the season of all historic record. While we will never be given the actual death toll from Katrina...

[ I'm Joseph Schmo of the Bi-Monthly Mortality Review. Mr. Secretary, when you cite these figures of those who have died in Hurricane Katrina, are you presuming that all bodies you find are victims of the hurricane, or do you need verification, not to take them away from the death toll, but to add them? ]

[ very deathly silence ensues... ]

We may be looking at a storm that will be worse than Katrina in terms of intensity, but it's highly unlikely that she can match Katrina in total damages OR deaths.

Like that is a consolation prize for abject misery.

Maybe we should pay attention to what the Bible is telling us.

Anyone notice the projected track is practically right over the President's ranch in Crawford and the Governor's Mansion in Austin?

I'll stop it now... It seriously just occurred to me tonight.

Well we do have 95 more years to go in the Century so maybe we can beat this season's total down the line.

So much for the Bible 8-)

Seriously, what does the Bible say about this? We can't pray hurricanes away. Someone undeserving always ends up getting hit by them. I really bristle a little bit when religion starts being brought into the discussion because it's really not relevant to why this is happening or where.

To me, where religion counts most is before the storm when we help our fellow man get out of harm's way, and after the storm when we take care of each other.

I smell a lock coming. Or even a DELETE. Although an underground is a bit at work.

I'm not taking a position on this, however, if you believe in intelligent design, things appear to be functioning as designed.

Swinging the Bible around when people have free will doesn't help. Free will = some action is required on your part. The warnings have been given. Heed them. Don't sit around praying; "oh great storm full of hate and thrashing about, why is that you twist and shout? Don't hit me for food and shelter I'll be without".

If you've been advised to evacuate then drop what you're doing and gas up the car, grab your favorite stuff, get some cash and get moving.
