I recently viewed a stormchasers video from Slidel Louisiana and there were 140 mph gusts in his opinion. They were brushed by the west edge of the eye before a shift to west winds in the southern eyewall. It is clear from his video that the southern eyewall redeveloped as Katrina reached the coast as he estimated gusts close to the strength he experienced in the northern eyewall. Having structures pounded from the east winds followed by west winds on the south side helps initiate a lot of the damage.
