AIRCRAFT AT 416 PM CDT...2116Z...INDICATED THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS
FALLEN TO 904 MB...OR 26.69 INCHES. THIS MAKES RITA THE FIFTH MOST
INTENSE HURRICANE IN TERMS OF PRESSURE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN.

RITA CURRENTLY RANKS BEHIND HURRICANE GILBERT IN 1988 WITH 888
MB...THE 1935 LABOR DAY HURRICANE WITH 892 MB...HURRICANE ALLEN IN
1980 WITH 899 MB...AND HURRICANE KATRINA LAST MONTH WITH 902 MB.

I believe katrina was 175 mph with a pressure of 902.
At 904 then, we may be close to that now with Rita.

Twice in one year...unbelievable.

a tom petty song comes to mind now "because i'm free, free-falling", Rita's pressure that is. Where does this crazy elevator down stop. 901-to top Katrina, 898-to top Mitch, 891- to top the Labor Day cane, or 887 dare i say to top Gilbert.

One other thing, the general consensus here is Rita is smaller than Katrina, correct? If i recall, smaller canes don't need the super low pressures to generalte extreme winds b/c the pressure gradients are smaller. If that reasoning is correct, then Rita may very well end up having higher winds at 904mb then Katrina did with 902mb

Eye seems to be contracting slightly. First this means it is probably not truly annular, and seconds it probably means there will be an EWRC coming soon to weaking it temporarily (the eye also looks a tiny bit ragged on the south side in the last sat frame).

What about Hurricane Camille of 1969? I thought her pressure was sub 905mb.

Hmmm just might, tomorrow will be the day if she does... morning before noon I bet.

And ditto on the REM.. and Max Mayfield saying this year might be a warm up year for the future...

The eye is expanding a little bit, not contracting. I don't expect an EWRC at this time. I think there may be one in 12-18 hours as the rapid deepening phase stops and it encounters cooler waters.
