Will it beat Gilbert?

I don't even want to think about it but here's the question. Is Rita going to break Gilbert's record for lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in the Atlantic basin?

She's fallen so far so fast, you have to wonder where the bottom is. She sure doesn't seem to have found it yet.

Lets hope soon. The one big positive is that it is rare for a category 5 to keep that strength for long. The negative is that it can happen.

STY Rita (878mb/October 1978) maintained Cat 5 intensity from south of Guam til landfall on the east coast of Luzon. The storm was moving fairly quickly so that was a period of above 50+ hours.
