Austin?

#1 Postby kiheiboy » Wed Sep 21, 2005 9:17 pm

Does anybody have any thoughts about Ritas affect on Austin. I lived in Orlando last year and when Charlie was still a day away everyone was concerned about Tampa. Of course as we all know it missed Tampa and slammed Orlando. Here in Austin the local mets aren't talking about Austin other than how we might get alot of evacs from Houston.

Looking on the tracks, we have a reasonable chance of Cat 1 hurricane winds. I'm preparing a bit of supplies in case we lose electricity for a couple of days.

Oh, in case anyone is looking, there are NO hotel rooms in Austin this weekend. We have a major music festival scheduled and they are all booked.

Prepare for hurricane force winds and extended power outages...

Right now, it looks like we will have 2-4 inches of rain, winds 40-60 mph with gusts higher. Maybe even some tornadoes. It is not going to be pleasant for us.

I'm really not TOO concerned about an extended electrical outage here. First, we have a city-owned electric utility. Second, I live just north of the University. I'd be very, very surprised if we had more than 24 hours without power.

If we get real strong tropical force conditions, I will not agree with your assessment.

Thanks. At least people are preparing for the worst. Like I said Orlando didn't take Charlie seriously but definitely learned for Frances and Jeanne. HEB is already out of bread and water. I wonder what ACL will do.

Run the Friday lineup, I'd say, and cancel the rest.

I have been wondering that myself. On one hand, if we do get tropical storm conditions, how in the world can they have that festival ongoing outdoors?!?! But on the other hand, I wonder if they're worried about taking a financial bath by canceling it. Hopefully safety and reason will win out in the end.

I was at HEB getting a prescription filled when this lady walks up and says "Can you believe this is the last loaf of bread in the store?"

I told her there were at least 6 other places within a mile or so to buy bread.

She looked at me like I was nuts. She wanted That one....

ACL said they'd announce they're decision in the AM. With models going east, we'll get less severe weather - but still ...

I would think the biggest danger in Austin would be flash flooding as opposed to Cat1 winds.

Yes, at this point ... with Rita heading more towards a Port Arthur/Beaumont/Galveston landfall and with the models showing a stalled Rita over the state for a few days, we could see some record-breaking rainfall totals in places ... and most assuredly, bad flooding.
