Media catch phrases in reporting hurricanes

#1 Postby PBFN » Thu Sep 22, 2005 2:06 pm

Lets hear some of the common catch phrases we all see on the news when they talk about hurricanes.

I'll start.

"Barrelling" towards the coast
"Lashing" the coast with xxxmph winds
"Steaming" towards your city

"The wind is really picking up out here..." (as they stand in the rain with their rain slicker trying to hold on to their hat!)

Wind? In a hurricane? Nooooooo! Really?? :dont:

I always love it when the news anchors in the studio ask the reporter in the field who's in the middle of a feeder band "So, how are things out there where you are?" I mean, really...is the reporter going to answer, "They're great! I shoulda brought my swimsuit!" LOL Just cracks me up....

my favorite is "unprecedented catastrophic event" that's the new catch phrase since Katrina :D . Wonder what they'll call the aftermath of Rita? Looks to be as bad, if not worse, than Katrina.

"It's a ghost town around here."
Jeff Morrow even pointed out what an overused cliche it is. (After he said himself of course.)

In harms way

S Florida reporter in Key West before Rita...." Key West was expecting a storm surge of 9 feet, now officials say somewhere between 8 and 10 feet"

The idiot said it twice....

Also another S Florida reporter on Miami Beach at 1 in the morning "Right now on Miami Beach a little unusual as we are not seeing the surfers that are quite often out during the storms"

No S_ _ _! It's 1 o'clock in the morning....Have you ever heard of a midnight surfer

I've heard the terms "barnstormer" "hold onto your britches" and "humdinger" all in relation to hurricane rita.
