All i can say..... is if you have pets.... you have to evac... you dont take them with you SHAME ON YOU.. fish, dogs, cats, birds , whatever....... hey... there maybe a law very soon that will fine you for stupid stuff you do... if you cant afford or dont want to take them with you in event of what we are seeing YOU SHOULDNT HAVE THEM TO BEGIN WITH and you should have major impositions against you..

This from a guy who makes his living off the sea. You should know better. Its not like every living cell will be vaporized. Anyway, just trying to back the poor guy up a bit, I know what he meant, and yes it is possible.......but yes, there are more important things to worry bout now.
Nuff said.

What happens to all the fish in new orleans and in places where there are hurricanes? I ask because some people keep very large dangerous fish in tanks, and if they entered the local eco system they could destroy it. The finest example of this is what happened in lake victoria with the nile perch, it brought the natural cichlid species population down from 300 to 100. What would happen if someones bad fish got into the water in new orleans? There would be a lot and it would be bad. What happens? I dont want that to happen.
The risk factor is not especially high in this case for a number of reasons.
1) The largest majority of invasive exotic species that have managed to establish themselves, have done so by accidental, or deliberate introductions into the local ecosystems by commercial interests. Most amatuer aquariests do not keep sufficient numbers of fish to be able to establish breeding colonies in the wild.
2) The average aquariest keeps freshwater species. The water in NO is brackish. Very, very few true freshwater species can survive in brackish water. Brackish water would not support true marine species either.
3) As mentioned earlier, much of the water in NO is a toxic soup that few things could survive in. The heat and decaying plant and animal matter would rob the stagnant water of most of it's oxygen, thus killing anything that survived the toxic pollutants.
Hopefully that put your mind at ease. While you were concerned about the individual aquariests, ever wonder about all the Pet Stores? Your were worried about the fish, how about all of those Tarantulas running loose?
