Question about greek alphabet storms?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Question about greek alphabet storms?

#1 Postby tampastorm » Fri Sep 23, 2005 7:27 am

I was reading yesterday, what happens if they retire a storm with a name from the greek alphabet? Great question IMO.

I was actually thinking about this the other day and came up with two possible solutions.

First solution is for them to skip the retired letter next time they use the greek alphabet....If 'Beta' is retired, then next time they would go Alpha, Gamma.

Second solution is to use the greek alphabet list similarly to the CPAC, WPAC, etc. storm name lists...that is use up to a certain letter, then next time begin with the next. Example: If 'Epsilon' is the last storm this year, then the next time the Greek alphabet is used, they would begin with 'Zeta'

Just thoughts, anyways

I believe the storms will be named:

Alpha '05
Beta '05
Gamma '05 ect ect

So...if Hurricane Alpha occurs this year, and is bad enough to be retired...Alpha '05 is the name retired...so if we have a storm in the future, that storm would be Alpha '09 or something. Thats what I heard

Hmmm that really doesn't make any sense though because basically every storm used would technically be 'retired'. Unless by some magic fluke they go to the Greek Alphabet in the year 2105..

I mentioned this in another post a few days ago...

The names will simply be the letter without a year added.

BULLETIN
TROPICAL STORM ALPHA ADVISORY NUMBER 3
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
10 AM CST FRI NOV 11 2005

None of the Greek letters will be retired in the event they cause severe damage and/or casualities. They don't retire depression numbers if they causes large numbers of deaths. Some depressions have been known to kill several hundred people.
