What scares the heck out of me

#1 Postby Stephanie » Fri Sep 23, 2005 12:15 pm

is the people that are still stuck in traffic trying to get out of the way of Rita. What happens if/when she comes onshore and people have run out of gas and/or are still in traffic?? They're sitting ducks!

Unfortunately that's what happens when millions of people all try to get out at the same time. I think that's why alot of people don't evacuate. They think they'll get stuck and they'll be stranded outside during the storm. They think they're better off staying home.

Stephanie, Scares me too. Plus, the people in the LA area are now getting mandatory evacuations. Where will they go??We are dealing with 2 states with Mandatory evacuations and seems not many know where they are going, where to go, or where to get more gas.......Even people who have evacuated, like SouthernGale has not found out that they have not evacuated far enough......I continue to feel more sick to my stomach hour by hour. And now to add to the mix, tornados!!! Now tornado warnings in MS as well!! Good God, help them all.

I went down to Baton Rouge at 1:00 am this morning (About 3 1/2 hrs south of Monroe). There were untold numbers heading north and when I returned a little bit ago most gas stations were running out of fuel. (I stopped at 4)There were signs all along Hwy 61 saying "this way to Monroe shelter"(Blinking road signs with those words on them.)It is going to be a mess all over the state.

MB:

Boy, can I identify. My stomach has been in knots for two days now. I am so scared for all of the people, especially those from S2K and another family I know. It's almost too much to bear and we are not being directly impacted. I can hardly imagine the range of emotions of those in the potential path. Hopefully, they will get the highways cleared out by this evening but then there are a whole different set of problems.

Florida saw the same problem when Floyd threatened the pennisula and Opal approached the panhandle. The thought of thousands of people gridlocked on I-10 with a monster storm approaching scares everyone. If Katrina taught us one lesson it is get the people out early. Luckily Houston heard that message loud and clear and still has problems! Maybe our traffic engineers need to rethink how we build roads in and out of threatened areas. Urban planners need to sit down with the experts this winter and re-think a bunch of things. According to the experts this year isn't a freak it's unfortunately going to be the norm for awhile.
