There's also isolated lightning strikes around close in to Rita's circulation (although not nearly the ring of fire eyewall lightning we saw when she first ventured into cat 5 territory). Nevertheless, these lightning strokes suggest more efficient traansfer of energy from Gulf into vertical development. I've noticed that since usually hurricanes contain such a lack of any lightning, lightning only occurs near the core of a storm when it is strengthening.
