Interesting Galveston Hurricane history - my grandfather.

#1 Postby NC George » Sat Sep 24, 2005 1:15 am

Well it just so happens I came to visit my grandparents today, arrived around 11 pm last night. I get there, and we immediately start talking about Rita. He was in the Coast Gaurd in WWII, and mentions he was in a hurricane in Galveston, one no one had heard of. That's right - he was stationed in Galveston in 1943 when the 'secret' hurricane struck. He was in the Coast Gaurd band, and his assignment during the storm was to keep snakes out of the shelter that everyone was staying in for the evening.
