when rajin rita cruised through here last week the reporters were really digging to find wind and rain and it was tough, they found one stretch of hwy 1 in the keys at mm 74 that had standing water on it and they converged on that like cornerbacks on terrell owens.

BTW Mike, spelt is not a word.
It was in the 16th Century...see Ben Jonson's works.
Wow. I thought he just ran the 100meter and used steroids.
(yeah I know Johnson is spelt different.)

Not just a southern phenomena.
Our local television market (N. MI.) is a dumping ground for newly graduated broadcast journalists. Very few folks from here on the air, and no clue how to pronounce the place names they have occasion to report on.
From our area:
Bois Blanc = "Bob-lo" not "Boys-Blank"
Seul Choix = "Sish-wa" not "Seel-choix"
Presque Isle = "Presk-Eel" not "Preskee-eyel"
Sault Sainte Marie = "Soo Saint Marie" not "Salt Sainty Marie"
Traverse City - Not "Travis" or "Truh-verse", "Trah-verse"
Mackinac/Mackinaw - both pronounced "Mack-i-naw", not Mack-i-nack"
Alanson - "Uh-lan-son" not "Allen-son"
Just a few that come to mind. Still waiting for Wequetonsing or Ocqueoc to make the news here. Could set the bar at a new level for mispronunciation.
