Joe Bastardi said it for himself
He was on the Sean Hannitty radio show yesterday (friday) afternoon.
He said "I am a very competitive person." that's an exact quote.
Sean was trying to get him to comment on Rita, and he wouldn't say anything until after he gave a spiel something like the following: (this is not an exact quote)
Before that, you people need to be looking at bermuda. There's a system out there that you don't even know about yet, but you all will be talking about it next week, and you can remember that I told you about it.
Then about Rita: I'll tell you where it's going to hit, and I'll be within 30 miles. "I am a very competitive person," I keep track of every one, and I keep score.
He was supposed to be on SH's TV show last night but I didn't get to see it.

Although I like Joe's personality and enthusiasm on his updates, I do get a bit tired of him over-hyping every storm. It just seems like if the forecast calls for a hurricane of 100 mph, he'll make it 125, if it calls for 125 mph, then he'll make it 150 mph. It just seems like he has to always forecast stronger than the NHC in spite of the data going against it. Now I know it's just his opinion, but it makes his forecasts a bit predictable. I'm not too sure why he always forecasts the to be stronger.
True, sometimes he can be right and the NHC may we weak on their storm forecast, but most of the time they are pretty good.

So didn't someone post here that he was still predicting a direct hit on Galveston yesterday?
How did that prediction work out?

See post above - he definitely predicted High Is., TX. Just up the coast from Galveston.

Mr. Bastardi really has the folks at Fox in his back pocket. Just listen to Greta Van Sustern gush:
"Here is an inside view: I confess, Joe Bastardi of Accuweather (search) is one of my favorite guests — especially on a Friday night when I am tired. While I regret the subject of his reports — hurricanes that cause death and enormous destruction — his reports make my job so easy. For instance on Friday night, I was pretty tired and I think by the end of the show there might have been a slurred word or two. When we got to the last segment — the one in which Joe was the guest — I just sat back and enjoyed his work. I knew he would take over completely and that I had no worries. I also knew that I would learn — and that I would get the right information. Joe is, in short, the best.
Joe is energetic (so he really grabs my attention as a viewer), he is smart (I learn from him each night), he has great maps (which are eye grabbing and help me understand weather better), he uses the entire time allotted (no need for me to ask even one question) AND he times out perfectly (he speaks until EXACTLY the time the segment ends.) Because he is a pro, I assume someone is giving him time cues and he adheres to them. I could perhaps just do the segment like this: "Joining us is Joe Bastardi... go!" Joe then takes over and completely and perfectly executes the segment. I do nothing but watch and enjoy! That makes for a near perfect ending on a Friday night. Now if only Joe could learn how to prevent hurricanes... then he would be perfect."

Well to be fair , NHC from what I have seen habitually underestimates the strength of hurrcains. How many times is it 80mph cain forcasted to slowly stregthen over the next few days with model plots saying 120mph. Then you wake up the next morning it's a 140mph storm and everyone is shocked.
Better to overestimate then underestimate anyway. People hear you say it will likly be a cat 2 in a few days they don't worry. People hear yo say it may become a cat 5 , they start paying attention.

As late as Friday afternoon, he was still calling for landfall in Galveston, TX, while we and the NHC were focusing on the Beaumont area. He may have said High Island Friday night, once it was 6 hours from landfall.
