South Texas snow and hurricane season....

#1 Postby whereverwx » Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:17 pm

With all that has happened to Texas recently, let’s not forget what happened on December 25th, 2004! It was a Christmas miracle for south Texas. Places like Houston saw their first snow in over 100 years. Other places, like Victoria I believe, saw up to 1 foot of snow.

Now I wonder… is there really a correlation between south Texas snowfall and hurricane season? Or is this year just an anomaly? Even though Houston was spared a direct hit, they still received strong winds. And let’s not rule out other places in Texas that got pounded by Rita.

We should also remember that the extreme southern areas of Texas got glazed by Emily and also received some snow in December. Most of all, hurricane season has yet to end. There may still be more to come. So thus, this data remains incomplete until this season had ended.

I always wonder why it could snow in places like texas, and florida but California at higher latitude hasn't seen snow in thousands of years outside of its mountains.

About a half inch of snow here (west of NOLA) on Christmas Day. And I have the pics to prove it. :)

Eight months later, we're getting blasted by 1 monster cane, and nine months later we're brushed by another.

I wrote a post at the beginning of hurricane season. I don't know if anyone could dig it up. I said that I had a feeling since both TX/and LA saw snow for Christmas, this year, we would have a rough hurricane season for the gulf coast. Nature has a way of balancing itself out. I have the book Isaac's storm. And the winter before the great 1900 Hurricane, snow piled on the beaches there as well.

Thanks for that memory on a day like today when the official temp in Corpus hit 106 for a record high and the unoffical temp at my house was 108.

Beg to differ. I had 10 inches of snow in my yard in the desert of CA. Ridgecrest, to be exact and in 1979. Had the most beautiful flowers all over the desert floor the following spring. By the way, the snow did not fully melt for 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.

Well, I don't have the time to look at the individual threads, but there's been several threads on the relationships between hurricane season and winter:

White Christmas and active gulf hurricane season (posted on July 15, 2005)

Winter weather vs Hurricanes (posted on September 29, 2004)

Active Tropics = Harsh Winter (posted on September 14, 2004)

You're welcome and don't be sorry, I mean who would go search and see if there was a thread half a year ago that had the same topic? :P
