It appears that a Caspian ridge is going to take shape over the next week or so and allow "cross-polar flow" (air masses from Siberia move across the north pole into Canada, then south) to develop. This will make the pattern amplify greatly with full-latitude troughs and ridges developing. It will allow unseasonably cold air to flood into the lower 48. The air in northern Canada is already unseasonably cold, so things should start getting very interesting across the lower 48 over the next few weeks. It is rather early in the season for cross-polar flow, but it appears to be a sign of things to come. It is just a question of where those full-latitude troughs and ridges setup that will determine who in the lower 48 gets unseasonably cold. The picture should become clearer over the next week or so.
It is really amazing how abnormally cold northern Canada is right now for this time of the season. When that cross-polar flow develops, it will grow even colder. Some of the coldest airmasses in the world are found across Siberia.
