Who Remembers This 1995 Tropical Storm?

#1 Postby MiamiensisWx » Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:58 am

Few may remember it, but this tropical storm made landfall in southeastern Florida in 1995 and brought very heavy rains to the region as well as in southwest Florida and northward into Georgia and parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. Who experienced this storm?

Here it is...

Fortunately, it didn't get any stronger than a tropical storm!

Here is it's track...

Do you think Florida dodged another bullet because of shear which limited Jerry from getting stronger than a tropical storm?

I remember when I lived in Largo at the time (i have since moved
to st. pete) one of Jerry's rainbands knocked over a large tree in
my yard. But I suppose it could have been worse...

Agreed... the waters around Florida were and are very warm. I received a lot of rain from Jerry as well. Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade and especially southwest Florida counties got a lot of rain.

I've noticed that, even in the past, westerly shear has protected Florida from storms that made landfall in the state by preventing them from getting stronger. Even last year, such an occurrence happened with Frances, where westerly shear weakened it from a strong Category Four storm with 145MPH winds down to a 105MPH Category Two storm. Why does shear often (fortunately) protect Florida like this on some (but not all) occasions?

I don't quite get the point of the what-if questions. Jerry wasn't a dodged bullet anymore than Gloria was a dodged bullet for New York City. Shear is out there, it's a fact of life. There is no spot in the tropical Atlantic that is always conducive to hurricane development. In essence, you're implying that almost any storm could be a dodged bullet because it can always be worse if conditions are right.

As far as Frances goes, it could have staggered around the Bahamas for a couple more days and dropped to a TS. If Andrew had encountered shear, it wouldn't have been a Cat 5. What if Rita stayed a Cat 5 and gone to Houston? We could play this all day. As I said to someone on here last year, looking at the long-term big picture, what we end up getting is usually about the average of the best- and worst-case scenarios.

I remember Jerry very well! I'm in Atlanta, and we got solid heavy rain for 3 whole days. Our pool was overflowing (and I'm sure we were trying to drain excess water too).

1995 was the first year I got really into studying hurricanes.
