Evacuee family gets home, loses home

FORT WORTH, Texas - News 8 profiled the Millers and their four children three weeks ago while they were staying at the Will Rogers Coliseum after fleeing Katrina and the Superdome.

Soon after the broadcast, the hurricane survivors were 'adopted' by a North Texas family who set the family up in an apartment in an attempt to give them a new start.

However, the Don and Shinda Miller are now leading a sheltered life once again after the family who offered a helping hand said they saw signs of substance abuse.

So, late Monday night, the Millers once again returned to the shelter.

Don Miller expressed anger at the situation.

"I ain't coming to Texas to get played," he said.

Shinda Miller was more resigned.

"Well, I can't cry over spilt milk," she said. "All I can do is just try to pray and move forward."

On welfare in New Orleans, the Millers admitted they have had tremendous trouble adjusting. But, Fort Worth has tried to make the change a bit easier.

"So, up to 12 months free rent and utilities...to help you get back on your feet," said one worker helping the Millers at the shelter.

Once again, the Millers will be moving to a new home.

The Dallas woman who tried to help the Miller's said she is broken-hearted that things ended so badly.

But, shelter authorities said they have seen many similar cases. Authorities said North Texans who want to help should instead volunteer.
