Southerngale is safe!
I talked to Southerngale earlier this evening. She's still in Jasper and has no local radio/tv stations available. She needs us to find out what we can about her area (nw of Beaumont) and when she might be able to head towards home. She also would need to get gas.

I found this link:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9389157/
‘We've never had this much devastation’
Beaumont, Texas, where the U.S. oil age began with the Spindletop oil well in 1901, was also hard hit by Rita. Its warehouses and other light buildings all but disappeared, although a feared storm surge never occurred, officials said.
“This is an emotional and devastating experience,” said Capt. Melissa Ownby of the Beaumont Police Department. “We’ve had hurricanes, but we’ve never had this much devastation.”
Although, the live shots from reporters in Beaumont indicate that the situation is not catastrophic. Hopefully the reporters are right.

I'm very happy to hear Southerngale is well.
Gasoline and ice will most probably become her biggest concern if the power is off for any period of time. In our area, there was no gas and VERY limited (if any) ice for about the first three or four days following Katrina. On the ice situation, for past storms, we had always depended on our local seafood stores to supply us with ice immediately following landfall. For Katrina, most of the local seafood stores no longer existed, and if they were still standing structurally, they were under several feet of surge. Surge-infused ice is not good for the belly...
Mama - if you talk again to Southerngale, please pass on my thoughts and prayers...

I believe Kelly lives in Lumberton, right Mama? Lumberton is north of I-10 and isn't suppose to be as bad as points south and east. However, I saw John Zarella on CNN tonite & he said that there were tons of pinetrees down in Lumberton with lots of power out that may not be resrtored for a long time.
Hoping he was inaccurate and that Kelly can get back to an undamaged home soon!

Getting conflicting reports about conditions in Beaumont. What little news footage I have seen shows significant damage but I did notice that some structures, including houses, had only light to moderate damage. It appears the most of the wind damage was caused by trees falling on houses; unfortunately in these instances the dwelling is usually destroyed. I am angered by reports that the city was "spared"; that is pure BS. Kelly I hope your home is ok..I will be thinking about u.

Wonderful news!! I believe she (and you!!) know all too well the cell problems that come up after a landfalling cane. Somehow, one of those companies should come up with a "hardened" structure that is self-powered and extremely resiliant to storm impacts. Of course, if the phone floats away, then all bets are off!!
