Toxic water
Ive been thinking about posting this as a topic for a while......dont know if i should have put it in this forum or "off topic" forum?
With all that toxic water being pumped out of New Orleans back into the big lake P (not going to attempted to try and spell it) and then it goes into the Mississippi River and eventually in the GOM.....how is that going to affect all the aquatic life and humans too? My Dad said that the ocean will clean the toxic water....is that true?
Yes we want New Orleans dry but i just find it very devasting. I hope the impact of it will not be too great....please i would like your thoughts and comments....thanks

I have thought of this also I mean there are decaying bodies and body parts in the water, sewage, trash, chemicals, you name it you got it. I decided right after they started pumping water back out I would not eat any sort of seafood again for years. Maybe I am being small minded here but oh well just my thoughts on it.

as opposed to the pure spring water coming down the mississippi on any given day.
the "toxic" angle was way overplayed and has no real basis or affect on reality....but made a great media talking point to get everyone riled up.
animals die and crap in the river all the time, humans are no different.

That water is full of chemicals, toxic waste, oil, gas, etc. PERIOD. You can't have a whole city flood and no chemicals or wastes be in the water. When you say "the toxic angle was way overplayed and has no real basis or affect on reality",that is not true. Take a glass of water and put hydrocloric acid or oil or and human wastes in it and give it to an animal and see what happens to the animal.

The wildlife around New Orleans will be affected very badly. This will be one of the main aftereffects of Katrina. And all that junk will go into the water supply in New Orleans, though the amount won't be too great.
Chemicals sink down to the bottom where they can settle. Plastics and medical waste stay there for millenia. As for fecal matter, I believe that they can too harm marine life, causing extensive algae blooms that cut off the oxygen for other marine life. There will be too many nutrients in the water.
Any way you cut it the wildlife and marine animals living around the Mississippi Delta and the surrounding waters will be affected significantly for many, many years and decades to come.
P.S. To remember how to spell the lake to the north of New Orleans, it's the words Pont + Chart + Rain. Lake Pontchartrain.

I too think this will have some ill effects on the water and enviroment. I know that in the springs here in Central Florida are having problems with algea blooms because of people using the bathroom in the water and run off from septic tanks, i.e. human waste. So I am sure there is more than enough drainage of human waste to affect the lake, and or river in NO. And the chemicals I have no clue about but just doesnt sound good to me. As for the ocean restoring and cleaning itself, I had heard the same and believe it to a point. But how long will it take to restore, or is there any damage to restore? I havent seen much in the news in the way of this. If someone has any recent articles on this I would like to view. Would like to know the results of what this event has done to the enviroment, if any at all.

Thanks for that site, very interesting. And I'm even more interested in what levels and types of contamination are being found.
Does anyone have a site that gives detailed results of water sampling in the affected areas including the northern Gulf offshore? This activity must be going on and I'm surprised it isn't covered constantly by the press.

i cant believe the press isnt all over this either

the last big press release on this was that the one saying that the runaway sci-fi hyped doomsday scenario of "toxic water" was not the case.
im pretty sure the press is not the government, and vice versa.
there are plenty of ACTUAL things to stress over..

no way normal storm runoff doesnt have E COLI.....a deadly bacteria in it....

e coli is everywhere and is as "deadly" as the common cold.
another fact (i know facts arent as fun for doomsdayers)....it is estimated that 40billion gallons of water is/was in new orleans to be pumped out. the flow from the miss river into the gulf is 400 billion gallons PER DAY. thats 400 billion gallons of the filthiest water you can imagine delivering toxic runoff and dead animal disease EVERY DAY.
2 words in summary and then i leave this thread to the conspiracists and "we're all gonna die" crowd:
drop

Thanks for the link and the specific information, djtil, its better than nothing. Until you posted these, there was basically net zero in terms of verifiable answers about this topic in this thread.
Just a few posts declaring supposed knowledge with nothing whatsoever behind it, like; " the "toxic" angle was way overplayed and has no real basis or affect on reality" (says....?); " the last big press release (what press release, where) on this was that the one saying that the runaway sci-fi hyped doomsday scenario of "toxic water" was not the case", and ; " it has been determined (by whom, when, what did they find, by the numbers?) that the flood waters are not overly toxic."
Therefore "du'ers", "i know facts arent as fun for doomsdayers", "i leave this thread to the conspiracists and "we're all gonna die" crowd", launched at us at the very same time you introduce something of substance, is out of line and not appreciated.
