What kind of tropical system would you like to experience?

#1 Postby Furious George » Wed Sep 28, 2005 7:51 pm

I've been wondering why it seams that people generallly try to pull a storm in their direction. Is wishchasting this prevelant, or are people just looking at the worst case scenario for them? Anyway, if -removed- is the answer, I'd like to find out. So, given the choice what type of system would you like to experience? And if you've experienced one recently, which one would you like the next one to be?

Yes, I accuse myself of -removed-. Even though I know the damage would be horrendous if a major came my way, I would still be excited if one were coming. The adreneline rush far outweighs the fear.

Right now, I had to vote "None" after watching Katrina and Rita destroy the LA coastline, along with MS, AL and FL. My nerves are shot from worrying about my friends and family and my eyes are crossed from looking at the computer monitor too much!

I don't want to experience any storms with the damage they do.
The winds and surge get really frightening. After conducting storm
chases- trust me on that.

I should move further inland. I am strongly considering moving
further inland. I couldn't deal with my home levelled by surge.

I've experienced everything up to a Cat 4. A tropical depression can be about as bad as a major hurricane-- if they sit over you and rain and rain and rain. Tropical weather is fascinating, but I could live the rest of my life happy if I never experienced one again!

Interesting, there are as many people who voted for "Cat 5" as "none".

Anyway, I have no idea. It would be exciting to witness one but I also know that it can be destructive.

Me too, Mama. I think I'm about done with storms of any category. Even after more than a month, the recovery effort at our house is still taking a full day - every day. At some point, we'll be about halfway between tearing out and rebuilding. But that point hasn't yet been reached. Probably not a dumb question to some, but in my book, it's one that had only one answer for me and my family...

I think it'll take a big one to hit where I live before I truly realize why I shouldn't want one. But believe me, when Rita was a cat. 5 coming this way, I certainly wasn't happy.

My guess is that anyone who has lived through one has voted none and the younger posters who see the thrill and don't own a home or have a family to support voted Cat 5. The more you have to lose the less likely you would want to go through the devastating effects of a tropical system. Cat4/5 are NOT fun -before, during and after. I know, I've been there.

I'll have to agree with that one. No way I want to see destruction to my home. But perhaps one of the biggest factors is likely the stronger storms will mean longer periods without power after the storm. And with the heat index around 110 the last 2 days in Houston, I cannot imagine being without A/C.

I have been through several hurricanes inland and I hated them all. I do have to admit that I like the clouds, wind and rain from a Tropical Storm here and there. The problem is flooding and tornadoes which I wouldn't wish on anyone so for those reasons I had to vote for NONE.

My personal experience with hurricanes has been a few minimal Cat-1's and/or strong Tropical Storms. I have, however, been under the gun a few times from major hurricanes.

I find them fascinating, and the young man in me kind of wants the experience. However, when I remember back to those few times when I really thought I was going to get hit by a Cat 3, 4, or 5, I didn't really feel so good.

Wow. I've been known to "root" for hurricanes, or whatever you want to call it, but even I wouldn't wish for that. After seeing what Katrina and Rita did, I can't believe you'd want that. You're right, it is exciting, but not when it is something like that. It is exciting if it's a Category 1, which is why I chose that, because you know it won't be overly bad, just fascinating and exciting. A Category 5, though, that is not exciting. Devastation like we've just recently witnessed is very sad, and not what you should be wishing for. Just imagine everything you own- gone. That would, without a doubt, be the worst feeling in the world. Think about that.

None...as having even big rain events here, not in hurricane season at all, can be really, really bad. Also, though I wasn't here, Hugo was one (of a few) that blasted Culebra. I've seen the pictures, heard the stories and prefer never to experience anything like that here. What I've been through on other islands and in Florida was enough. But maybe that's the key, as others have said...been there, or close enough. Done that. Next experience of a positive life changing sort that doesn't include the lesson of "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger", please.
