Levy Breech

#1 Postby sprinklerman » Fri Sep 30, 2005 7:39 am

There has been a lot of discussion about the levy breech on the lake and the 17th street canal breech. Has it been determined what was the sequence of events. My understanding is that the levy where the canal comes into Lake Ponchatrain broke which flooded the canal and then the canal failed. I did hear that a barge in the canal might have been th ecause of the canal breech.

I also understand that the repairs they made to teh levy on the lake has put the cnal inoperative because they can't pump out of the canal into the lake. Can anybody explain why that is?
Thanks!

First its LEVEE..please everyone get that right ( not just you :D )

There isn't a levee on the canal between Lake P and the canal. The canal connects to the lake to allow the pumped water out into the Lake.

You have to pump out the canal so the scour hole( erosion pit) on the canal side of the levee can be filled with a material that wont just wash out( packed earth with stone).
