What did you take...?

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Fri Sep 30, 2005 10:57 am

Following the lead of Sam Malone on his morning show on KTRH today, I'm going to ask evacuees -- "What one thing did you take that you look back on now and wonder, 'What was I thinking?' or what do you regret taking with you?

One guy called in and said, "Diapers...and I have no children." Another bachelor mentioned bringing Silly Putty.

A lady called in and said that she grabbed her Miami Vice DVD's. "I had to save Don Johnson."

Someone else said they saw a parking meter in the back of a pickup truck.

One guy said they didn't evacuate, but that his wife brought their boogie boards in from outside and put them in their safe room. When he asked why she was saving those, she said, "If the water comes in, we'll need something to float on."

Another guy said he told his kids to pack for a week, but then they didn't have to leave. When he pulled out the bags from the car, one son's bag was hard and heavy. He looked inside and saw that the child packed all his CD's, CD player, Playstation 2, and PS2 games -- no clothes whatsoever.

I'll admit I packed my Patty Duke video collection (too hard to replace and I would have regretted not saving them). But I had room for everything important also (clothes, photos, papers, supplies, tool box, water, food) and two extra passengers.

I took:

- My diplomas and two copies of my thesis
- Family pictures
- The usual insurance and financial papers
- A jewelry box my father made; another jewelry box my father bought for me in Egypt
- Sushi trays my father made
- All of my Raku pottery and some other pottery
- My computer, mouse and keyboard
- Some of my nicer handbags
- Hurricane kit
- Clean towels
- Two weeks worth of work clothes
- Lots of t-shirts and shorts
- Food

Something I wondered why I grabbed when I started grabbing random things to fill the car once I had the stuff I really needed in there:
- A steel mask that would survive a semi-truck running over it

Something I didn't take and fretted over the entire time I was evacuated:
- My VooDude (made by a New Orleans artist and easily my favorite art piece):

That's really funny, I only took one thing...my grandmothers diamond ring.

I honestly didn't bring anything else although if the worst had happened I'd have regretted that.

Oh, I did bring my laptop.

No room for anything important of mine (I wore all my priceless jewelry - priceless only to me, that is!) - had to have room for all my teenagers things consisting of 3 live dogs, 2 live cats, 1 live pig, and 1 live frog named Y2K - and by the way, the frog was suppose to only live a couple of years according the excellent salesman at the Woodlands Mall.

My daughter had to take "Red Bear" a big red teddy bear we bought her and her twin sister when they were still babies. She's now 22 years old. She also took all her clothes from her college dorm room.

I don't think I took anything stupid. I did pack BADLY though. I didn't think about things I was bringing that I would need daily, vs things I was taking for sentimental value. So, my undies, socks, shorts, etc were in a huge suitcase underneath my business suits, my dearly departed mom's mother-of-the-bride dress and DD dad's dress whites, as well as family photos, etc. I had to dig everything out to change clothes!

The most precious things I took were my mom's china and silver... not because of monetary value, but because she adored them... and my dad's uniforn and medals.

Things are just things. They can be done without or replaced, except when they have strong sentimental value.
