Another thing that has not been mentioned is Marine Life on the beach in Gulfport. They did not evacuate those mammals. After seeing the dead sea lion I am outraged!! I heard that the dolphins are now free in the Gulf and the trainers are feeding them. I do not know if that is true or not because there are so many rumors floating around here.

They've gotten some of the dolphins and sea lions relocated:

"Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, Mississippi was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Florida's Gulfarium, Gulf World Marine Park and Sea World of Orlando have all helped to recover, save and house some of the marine animals from this park. There are still some dolphins and sea lions from the facility that are unaccounted for.
Florida's Gulfarium is housing six of their dolphins and three sea lions temporarily untill Marine Life Oceanarium is up and running again. Staff from Seaworld and Gulf World as well as the Gulfarium traveled to Gulfport just after the hurricane to pick up the animals. The dolphins and sea lions were brought here, and some of the other sea lions were taken on to Seaworld. One or more of the Marine Life staff will be staying here in the Fort Walton area to help take care of their dolphins while they're with us. Some of the Marine Life staff are currently without a home and lost everything they had since the storm hit."

Yeah, the dead sea lion kinda really brings home the reality in a helpless kind of way. In my understanding, they evaced the sea lions to some pools near the beach - I believe some might have even been in the pool at the Oasis Hotel. Of course, all those hotel pools were inundated with surge and hence, that's when their nightmare began. Very sad indeed.
