What was worse for Mobile, Alabama-Katrina or Frederick?

#1 Postby JTD » Fri Sep 30, 2005 8:41 pm

With the devastation and tragedy in NOLA and MS, it's hard to remember that for the first few hours after Katrina hit, Mobile was thought to be the worst hit location.

How did Mobile do? Was Katrina worse than Frederick, equal or less?

Well Jason, Having been in Mobile after both Fredrick and Katrina, without a doubt Mobile was hit much harder by Fredrick than Katrina.....MGC

Speaking of which... What's the word from Dauphin Island? I heard the entire west end - with all those high-dollar homes - is completely gone and that now a channel runs across the island, north to south in that area.

Dauphin Island and Bayou La Batre are devastated. In Mobile, the Port Authority (State Docks) went under water along with Water Street.

In addition, there was a lot of flooding along the Fowl River, the Causeway, and waves were reportedly crashing over the Bayway. The USS Alabama is now listing toward the portside.

one did not have the 130 m.p.h. winds in Mobile, as there was during Frederic. The tidal surge wa smuch higher in Katrina though

One interesting note, damage on the overall was less than expected in Alabama because on the eastern part of the state, there was not much to damage since the region was so devastated by Ivan

Being in Fairhope during both I have to say the Winds were worse in Frederic. During Katrina it was the storm surge that got us. Both were bad but different types of damage.

In fact, I'd almost say the winds here in Biloxi were worse in Frederic. The trees sure took a beating as did many, many roofs. Of course, the wind was from the north and northeast the entire time, and the tide levels were actually negetive then.

In my situation now, had it not been for Katrina's surge, I'd be doing okay - relatively speaking. I'm not saying the wind wasn't an issue with Katrina - surely there are many roofs messed up and trees down - but with Frederic, the wind seemed to be significantly louder and more consistent, even all the way over here in Biloxi.

I was here in Lucedale for both canes, and I have to think Frederic was worse as far as wind. We got the western eyewall of Frederic. Surge was MUCH worse for Katrina.

I put up a Frederic page on my website a while back......
