Dog question....hot spots?

kkcool - I'll look for that product - thanks a lot! My youngest daughter has this problem too. We're both alike in many ways, uncanny. She has ADD, I suspect I did in school too. I'm a light sleeper, talk in my sleep, etc. She does too! And our oldest is like her dad. Funny how that works out....anyway, I bought a tube of Aveeno Intensive Hand Cream last year, b/c her hands were so bad - deep cuts that bled a lot. This cream is her wonder cream - it clears all of that up. It seeps into your skin for 24 hours. Even if you wash your hands, some of it already is deeply absorbed and doing its magic. It's pricey, almost $6 a tube but well worth it.

One trick I've used when my hands are very dry, with the deep cracks and cuts that often bleed - I fill an old bowl with warm to hot tap water. I add a few good squirts of baby oil. Then I soak my hands, forcing the cracks open so the oil seeps in. I do this as many times a day I can fit in. Laura does too (but swears the Aveeno cream is even better). There's something about the baby oil and warm water. Afterwards my hands almost feel normal!

I've been referring to our flea tube meds as Advantage - it's actually Advantix, as some have mentioned. Oops. She got it tonight right before being tucked in.

Steph - pets are like little kids! Hope is always so happy to return home after a kennel stay or a vet appt. Which really breaks my heart for all those displaced pets from Katrina. Happily many are in new homes now but I'm sure they're not all calmed down yet. I know Hope would miss us terribly. She is so attached to us.

Mary, my mom has recently discovered fleas in her house.
Guess what? She doesn't have any pets!

BUT - there's a stray cat that frequents her garage (scratching like
crazy, while looking for mice), and, it hangs out there, during the
day when her garage door is open.

She's had to keep the garage door closed, now, and, set off bug
"bombs" in the garage, and, spray inside her house, because of
her tracking them inside from the garage. Poor Mom - she
sprays herself with insect repellent before she comes over so she
won't bring them here or anywhere else. She set the bombs off,
today - I hope it does the trick!

Well since this thread came and went, our Bandit had a go round with this. It all happened fast. Within a couple days he had his one shoulder scratched raw. Being between paychecks, I called around and found a vet who would just sell us some Advantage without a visit. She advised us to give him benedryl 3X daily, initially use antibiotic cream, and then use cortisone cream.

It worked like a charm. He stopped scratching, it scabbed over, and now it's about 90% new skin with hair growing back again.

We also took his harness off, which made him real happy. It was contributing to the irritation spot.

Ed - this has become a common problem apparently. The perfect time of year I was told for skin irritations to start. Hope just finished her antibiotics, they last for 2 weeks. That was odd but I re-read the directions twice, 1 capsule 2 times a day. She's going to miss her pills. We give them to her in dabs of cream cheese or peanut butter (now that my oldest who's allergic to it is away at school).

Heard Benadryl is very soothing. A good med to keep on hand for kids and adults but apparently for dogs too.

Glad your Bandit is feeling a lot better!
