AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
335 AM AST MON OCT 3 2005

.DISCUSSION...WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE VERY HUMID AND
UNSTABLE ACROSS THE LOCAL REGION THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY. THE 00Z
SOUNDING CAME IN WITH A PRECIP WATER OF 2.28 INCHES AND A LIFTED
INDEX OF -4.5. SATELLITE PICTURES ARE SHOWING A BAND OF MOISTURE
THAT EXTENDS NORTHEAST OF THE LOCAL ISLANDS. ACCORDING TO MODEL
GUIDANCE...THIS BAND OF MOISTURE WILL REMAIN JUST NORTHEAST OR
OVER THE LOCAL ISLANDS DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS. GOOD THETA-E AND
OMEGA VALUES WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUMEROUS SHOWERS...
HEAVY AT TIME AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS OVER PARTS OF THE LOCAL
ISLANDS AND COASTAL WATERS. AS ALWAYS...WITH SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY COMES THE CHANCE OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN WHICH CAN LEAD TO
AREAS OF URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING AND RIVER FLOODING. ALL
THIS WEATHER CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO AN ELONGATED UPPER LOW LOCATED
OVER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN EARLY THIS MORNING. AT LOW LEVEL...A
MAINLY SOUTHEAST WIND FLOW WILL PERSIST...ADVECTING CONSIDERABLE LOW
LEVEL MOISTURE OVER THE LOCAL AREA MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY. AN
UPPER HIGH IS EXPECTED TO BUILD JUST NORTH OF PUERTO RICO...
BEGINNING TODAY AND WILL PUSH THE UPPER TROUGH SOUTHWESTWARD. ON
THURSDAY...WE SHOULD RETURN TO TYPICAL AFTERNOON PATTERNS THAT ARE
MORE DEPENDENT ON THE SURFACE WIND DIRECTION.

Dont leave the unbrellas if you arev going out those who live in the NE caribbean islands this week because that pesky throgh will hang around this week to provoke scattered showers heavy at times with many lighting and thunder like last night when the show of lighting and the rumble of thunder was plenty.

I was on a cruise to Grand Cayman, Costa Maya (halfway between Cozumel and Belize), Belize, and Cozumel last week. We just barely skirted TD #20 on the return to Tampa Friday night into Saturday. We had beautiful sunny weather except for occasional showers Saturday. Looks like we really lucked out! :)

Except for the fact that I can't have the Island Woman cart open when it's raining, we are LOVING this (of course, we don't get mudslides and flooding unless it gets crazy, like last April, which I hope it won't...and the tourists aren't too thrilled but...).

My business - a sort of gypsy caravan cart that opens up on the sides and front...selling the hot sauce I make and a few other kinds, along with jewelry, shell boxes, whatever looks interesting to me that fits in a small space - that I have set up by our non-opening bridge (my biz license has the address as By the Bridge - I love Culebra!).
If it rains...I *could* sit under the umbrella and people *could* stand under the overhaning front but...why? 8-) It would ruin the motto painted on the front..Open Some Days Closed Others.

Right now we are experiencing thunder, very heavy rains and winds and white out conditions.
Let's see how long the power stays on!

We have not had the rain truly stop but no white outs thankfully...power goes out for tiny minutes. The cat is huddled on the bed, and I dug out a sweatshirt - weather radio says 75, I'm chilled. Cabin fever set in, I had to put the car in 4 wheel drive to get out to the road, mud city. But oh my, the plants are SO happy!!! The radar is bizarre.

602 AM AST TUE OCT 4 2005

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SAN JUAN HAS EXTENDED THE

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR ALL PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

* UNTIL 8 PM AST TUESDAY EVENING

* A VERY UNSTABLE AND HUMID ATMOSPHERE WILL CONTINUE TO ALLOW FOR
THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORM ACROSS THE WATCH
AREA. SOME OF THESE SHOWERS COULD PRODUCE TORRENTIAL RAINFALL
WHICH MAY RESULT IN FLASH FLOODING ACROSS PUERTO RICO OR THE
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. THE GROUND REMAINS VERY SATURATED...ESPECIALLY
OVER THE EASTERN PORTION OF PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S. VIRGIN
ISLANDS.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR HEAVY
RAIN ACROSS THE WATCH AREA...WHICH MAY LEAD TO FLOODING. IF YOU
ARE IN THE WATCH AREA...CHECK YOUR PREPAREDNESS REQUIREMENTS...
ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE INTERESTS ALONG AREA RIVERS. KEEP
INFORMED...AND BE READY FOR QUICK ACTION IF FLOODING IS OBSERVED
OR IF A FLASH FLOOD WARNING IS ISSUED.

PEOPLE IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE AWARE OF THE
POSSIBILITY FOR HEAVY RAINFALL. AVOID LOW LYING AREAS...AND BE
CAREFUL WHEN APPROACHING HIGHWAY DIPS AND UNDERPASSES. THE
HEAVY RAIN COULD ALSO CAUSE MUDSLIDES IN AREAS OF STEEP TERRAIN.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO...LOCAL TV...RADIO OR YOUR
CABLE TELEVISION PROVIDER FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE
WARNINGS.

Another wet day is instore for Puerto Rico and adjacent areas.

Right now we are having very heavy rainfall, whiteout conditions, winds about 20mph. From weather station on east end of Tortola:
7am Sun - 7am Mon 4.01 inches of rain
7am Mon - 7am Tue 2.48 inches of rain

Mon-Tue measurement he got was surpassed where I live, as I'm sure at least 3 or more inches fell here yesterday.

I'd reported Sunday night about no winds, then yesterday power was out 7 1/2 hrs so I didn't report. Wind began Sunday night late. On Monday it was alternately calm and then gusty up to 30kts or better.

Power outage was storm related, a fire on a pole, probably either lightning or limbs on lines caused a short. Our amazing electric company managed yesterday to replace the pole and transformer and re-attach all the lines in the horrible weather we had! I'm so grateful, otherwise my whole refrigerator/freezer of food would have spoiled (it was pretty much warm after 7 1/2 hrs), and would have had no running water until fixed(cistern on electric pump). :D
