Earliest major snowstorm in North Dakota in 130 years Option

#1 Postby kenl01 » Sun Oct 09, 2005 2:08 am

5 October 2005 – With up to two feet of snow and blizzard conditions, one of the earliest major snow storms to hit North Dakota in 130 years has shut down highways, closed schools, downed trees and knocked out power to thousands. National Guard soldiers were called out to rescue stranded motorists in the southwestern part of the state.
"It is, on our records, probably one of the earliest ones, as far as our recorded history goes, in 126, 130 years," said Sam Walker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck .

As much as 11 inches of snow fell in southeastern Montana . Billings received 10.8 inches of snow, almost one inch over the old record of 9.9 inches, said meteorologist Tom Humphrey.

Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah received its first snow of the year, with more on the way.

Yes, indeed a record breaking early season blizzard !

Some aditional accumulated snowfall totals included:

Oct.5th:

Carlyle,MT 18"
Wibaux,MT 16"
Bowman,ND 15"
Halladay,ND 15"
Richardton,ND 15"
Glendive,MT 12"

Following the storm, Williston,ND, bottomed out at 12 F, a significant feat this early in the month. In part because of this, they are currently at -6.6 F below average for the month, whipping out temps that hovered around 90 degrees on the 1st, making this even more impressive.

I too am waiting for fall in Tampa. Supposed to get to a low of 69 this weekend, but I will believe it when I see it. Anyone know if it snowed in Minot? I have a friend at the base who's a Floridian and this will be his first winter in Minot.

Minot had white-out conditions; they basically shut down during this storm. There were power lines down, and the powers-that-be were worried about people getting into live wires, from what my MIL that lives up there told me.

Kim, Thank you so much for the info on Minot. I didn't realize it was so bad in that area. I'm going to email my friend and see how he is doing.

arkess7,

Actually I live in SC at this time but I spent some time in Minnesota from 200 to 2002. Took a trip to Northern North Dakota in late January 2002 to get away from the relatively mild winter in Minneapolis that winter, (since we all know 2001-02 is a curse word), and they sure caught it pretty good.

5 deg F and north winds 30 to 40mph in late January in Pembina,ND, and about 6" snow piled up against the fences in the middle of a wheat field. I parked my car there and walked against the wind - fortunately I was all prepared with a face mask, winter coat.....etc. I was just south of the Canadian border. Good thing that I got back into my car and went back to the motel down in Drayton,ND, after 30 minutes because my engine felt sort of funny when I left. But I had my fun seeing some arctic weather ! :D
