Well as far as the planes and mets on board are concerned I think they give accurate data and the NHC uses that data.. IF there has been a problem with Winds and Pressures matching up as you like that issue would more likely deal with the Sattelite data, TNumbers and other estimates.. I think the data the planes put out is good and is double checked..They have some new planes this year afterall.. Always could use more hardware but I think the Sattelites are where the data issues are..

Once again, it appears that a meteorology lesson needs to be taught. The NHC has not had a problem measuring winds to correspond to lower pressures this year. The overall pressures throughout the basin are a shade lower than normal. Between that and abnormally larger circulations, the pressure gradient is lower than normal. Wind speed is not directly related to pressure, but rather pressure gradient. That is why we have less-windier storms with systems of much lower pressure. This isn't about a lack of abilities at NHC. This isn't about legislation. This isn't about funding. This is simple meteorology here. There is no need to replace the equipment on the hunter planes. There is absolutely no need to replace the pro mets. Maybe, instead, we need to replace the "Monday Morning Meteorologists."

Excuse me???
Read senorpepr's post above you, he eloquently explains the pressure/wind relationship and that it is not a direct correspondance, but is related to the overall radius of winds (gradient).
It has nothing to do with funding...although an increase in the budget of NOAA is in order after their superb performance this season. JMHO.

If the private sector controlled recon, there will tend to be more subjectiveness in the data to benefit that corporation's agenda.

The media has already taken over that end.... not the private sector
mets. The media has done with the NHC what you are saying the private
sector would do...

Then there's no reason to make it any worse.jax wrote:senorpepr wrote:jax wrote:the Gov. could turn it over to the private sector... Accuweather

Respect people's job. Tropical cyclone is really a very special thing. Maybe you'd like to be at their place
You make a great point there.
The topic of letting the private sector take care of recon came up in here. Here's a thought to ponder: the likelihood of a private business transmitting realtime (or near realtime) observations is very low. Those who are monitoring every HDOB... that won't exist. Remember the year before when all we had were RECCOs and VDMs? That won't exist either. Plus, any observations that are relayed to the NHC would likely be "adjusted" to better verify their own forecasts.

There is absolutely NOTHING stopping Accuweather from buying their own airplanes and starting their own recon flights to compete with the NHC. there's also nothign stopping them from putting their own satellites into orbit. What they want is for our tax dollars to support their efforts. No thanks.

Legislation
I agree they have had problems.
1. Budget cuts
2. Aging equipment
3. Attacks by the private sector
4. Legislation to limit their ability to report to the public
5. Enduring outright lies by a certain Senator about their performance with Katrina vs. Florida
6. taking a bashing from critics sitting safely in front of their computers that couldn't make even the most remote guess as to what is about to happen.
7. Listening to baseless comments from halfwits who are suddenly experts in meteorology, aviation, statellite orbit tasking, ocean science and any other thing they can find to critique.
Nobody is perfect. Give these guys the break they deserve.
Question about number 4...can someone site the source on this?
Thanks.

:::applause:::
Not only should we give them a break, we need to give them more money, because they provide a critical service to homeland security. These are incredibly smart people who love what they do and who work harder and smarter than anyone here can ever imagine with extremely limited resources. These guys deserve our respect, not insults and armchair second-guessing from the ignorant.
Bravo. Amen to that.

5 AM EDT MON AUG 29 2005
AIR FORCE RECON HAS BEEN INVESTIGATING KATRINA THIS MORNING AND HAS
REPORTED SOME MECHANICAL PROBLEMS WHICH HAS PREVENTED MAKING A
COMPLETE ASSESSMENT OF THE INTENSITY IN THE NORTHEAST QUADRANT.
I just read this for the first time. We have a 4/5 about to make landfall,
and we don't get a complete picture for the NE (worst) quad?
