I've had the pleasure of once owning both Camillus (present USMC contract) and WW II Ka-Bars myself! The Camillus is more comfortable in the hand, but the steel is standard 1095 @ RC 57; the original Ka-Bar knives were constructed of tool steel (comparable to L-6 alloy) @ 59-61 RC hardness. Both were "parkerized", but the most recent variants have gone over to powder-coated flat black epoxy, which is NO improvement!

The early models did have incredible edge retention, but were easily subject to rusting if left "unloved". If yours is cleaned up, let me share a little secret with you...go to (http://www.museumreplicas.com) and look for "Renaissance Wax". This is a microcrystalline product that the British Museum uses on its armor and weapons collection, and it wears like iron on the blade...impervious to fingerprints, moisture, etc. A VERY little goes a long way!

If you still have that old "beater" Ka-Bar, keep it close to the chest; it will be worth a small fortune in the collecting market!

Marshall, if you want to "talk shop" with me at any time, use the E-mail...that's why it's there, Sir! :D

(I should have added that I have spent more than a few years restoring old rifles and edged weapons; no machine shop, no "bells and whistles", but the old-fashioned way...by loving, handworked care. And I have never disappointed any who came my way...even my kid's friends who asked me for a little "help" now and then, for which I didn't charge a penny.)

I am heading to sleep with a little light snow still falling. Hmmm...will we have college tmrw :?: That question to be answered at a later date. For now, I am heading to dream land.

Have a great night everyone and don't let all the caffeine keep you awake.

Ah some more have wandered in!!

A big Stovian welcome to Petal Pusher and Big Dave!!! Glad you could join us here!!! :D It gets warmer and warmer in here with each new face. Everyone is doing a great job of keeping the fire going!!! It's working so good that it has even warmed up outside!! :o It was 41f here when I started on the boards and it is now 47f. Good job everyone!!! :bgbounce:

Well, I see where all the chocolate KK's went!!! Crouton!! Slow down so someone can wipe off that snout!! I didn't need those KK's anyway!! :o Some hot CoCoa would hit the spot though. Ah, there it is. Now I'll just lean back and reach over like th...... whoa what happened? Where's the Cocoa? What's it doing up there? It was right behind....OOOOHHHHH!!!!! No wonder my head hurts!!! How long will an ice pack last near the stove? :?

Weatherwise we are in for a weeklong warmup here in Houston. Looking at 70's for highs in 2 days! Then a cool down on Sunday. Still haven't looked at models today, but I keep hearing about another ARCTIC outbreak in about 10-12 days that could rival 1989 in our area. We had a nasty mix of ice and snow that winter about this time with temps in the low 20's after the precip ended. I do a more thorough look tomorrow and post my thoughts at the USA weather thread.

In case you didn't hear, Dennis isn't gonna do much posting for the next 7-10 days. He's doing fine, but needs to keep the foot up and rested. Knowing him we'll hear from him once or twice at a minimum though! :D

Here's a couple of logs on the fire to tide us over! Stay warm and safe all!!

Morning everyone...as you can see...I am up 1st as usual..lol I went to bed last night @ 5pm and woke @ 3am...go figure.

While I too have and had good memories of TWC for the times I was there, I'm bitter as to how they now handle their members and also the lack of response when there is a situation. Karan, i know where you're coming from, but if you walked a day in my shoes over there, you'd see where the angst lies within me. After all, they didnt show me anything that warrants respect for their actions, they didnt give me a reason for kicking me off either.

While I could go on and on about it, its not winning me any battles. While you also can post there, I cant...and after 8291 posts I'd bet that most people would be a little miffed on how things were 'handled' for some ordeals there.

Thats why I'm here now...so even if I talk about TWC and all its glory for while I was there...there's still tension..and it'll always be there since JohnAdmin seemingly is never around to answer even technical questions asked days ago. To me, thats just not good business and running the boards properly. I've run a few boards on my own as Admin and been a Mod as well, but I gave respect to each person and never judged a soul.

Anyhow, its water under the bridge now, and I know these guys here strive for perfection, have a great crew in place who'll listen, be there, and almost always on hand to chat/message etc...and to me thats what its all about Communication Without that...these message boards wouldnt survive.

With all of that, I'll be here later on and floating around and see who shows. Take care everyone and stay warm and dry.

Morning Rob! Today is the big day...your 1000 posts better come this afternoon or I will be upset! :)

I better add another log onto the fire.

Looks like sunshine finally for me with no precip. in the forecast for the next 4 or 5 days, and that looks to be liquid.

Have a great day everyone!

How ya doing, gang! As usual, I miss a lot of happenings around the boards when not online on weekends. A big happy welcome to the new (I mean familiar) faces from TWC.

Breeze, I love your 'do. What do you call it, "The F3"?

We had an inch of snow overnight, temps early in the AM: 33º, AND THEY CANCELLED SCHOOL! :? Wimps! The kids are loving it though, tracking snow in and out with the dog. I'm now the "hot chocolate command center" for the neighborhood. It's fun though, just a drag making up the days later on when the weather's nice.

Have a great day! :)

On a lunch break from work ... gotta go back in a bit ... however, temperature hovering around 50, and WNW winds now kicking up between 15 to 25 mph. A surprise thunderstorm accompanied the line of showers which passed through here earlier ... with temperatures in the upper 40's ... quite a bit of dynamics ...

Finished eating a huge lunch and quite stuffed.

It's snowin here too but we're only supposed to get an inch. And my son's little league tryout is tonight (indoors - good thing).

Streetsoldier, watch those knives - you could hurt yourself. Of course a sharp knife is safer than a dull one - right?

Rob, Maybe I missed it, did you get your ticker checked? How did you make out?

Take care in the snow everyone. Watch your step, and don't fall on your ass.

coriolis,

I'm not the "guy(s)" who should be concerned with getting cut...

The wife doesn't like handguns, but blades are OK with her...(?); besides, if we have a break-in, all the "goodies" are downstairs, and those can be replaced. Once he (or they) decide to come up those stairs...that's another question entirely.

Sadly, our only phone jack is downstairs, too...our PC is hooked into it. This means I'm "on my own" until and unless I can stop 'em at the stairs...and I know the layout, have a "poogle-puppy" alarm system, and they won't know where that "rhino" came from...LOL

Good late morning (PST) everyone. It is a rather mild morning here, as my temperature currently is 73.5 degrees under almost overcast skies. e are expecting some rain in about 36-48 hours from a large ULL about 900 miles southwest of here.

Today is my laundry day, so after this post I have to go check on my laundry. Don't worry if I disappear for a few minutes, OK? ;) I also have cleaned up my room some.

Hope you all have a great Monday (well, as great as Mondays can be). Joshua

Good afternoon folk. It is a breezy cool day here in the deep south. Highs somewhere in the 40-50's Rain like a dog last night. Misty rain this morning. I will put on a pot of fresh coffie, open a box of crispy cream donuts and warm myself bye the fire for awhile. Anyone care for a cup & donut?
