QUICK! SOMEONE START ARCHIVING ACCUWX/NHC FORECASTS!
I want to (at least attempt to) put this issue to rest by using Wilma as an example. If someone who's a paying member of accuweather would please SAVE TO YOUR COMPUTER the forecasts produced by them and also SAVE TO YOUR COMPUTER the forecasts generated by the NHC. I'm curious to see, side-by-side, what they both think. Post the forecast images here as they're produced -- do not just hotlink them as they're updated several times daily.

You know... I can remember a post several weeks ago where someone commented that Bastardi had forecasted that Florida would be getting a major hurricane by the end of the season. Not that I rely on his forecasts but I do have to give him some credit for this because everyone was criticizing him for his hype. Was he right or what? does anyone remember that post? or was I dreaming?

PLEASE DON'T TURN THIS THREAD INTO A BATTLE OF THE "JOE B. KICKS ACE" CROWD AND "THE NHC RULES" PEOPLE-- we all have our opinions, including me
. I was just wondering if we could merely have each of their forecasts side-by-side (posted in one place) for the duration of the event as a method of comparison.

Not exactly rocket science to make this prediction. Dr. Gray and others were saying that there would be a major or two before the end of the season. Climatology favors Florida this time of year. So...duh.
Someone in the promet forum had done a good job comparing Joe B's forecasts vs. NHC vs. actual for Katrina. He was off by quite a bit, if I remember the thread correctly. I'm sure you could still find it.

Exactly.
and we don't know if he's right yet... if it doesn't hit as a 3, he's wrong.

Thank you MzShell. And although it was predicted, I have seen many Octobers come and go with no major hurricanes here.

A "prediction" or "forecast" is: "A major hurricane will hit Florida's west coast on Oct. 21."
Saying something like "Florida may well see a major hurricane before the season is over" is called a "guess" hiding behind climatology, because it's very likely Florida will see an October storm in any active season -- and if it's not a major, then you were just off a bit on the intensity.
