hurricane chasing

#1 Postby floridahurricaneguy » Tue Oct 18, 2005 6:32 pm

Ok... I hope I dont ruffle feathers asking this or upset anyone, dont why it would though. Anyone here do storm chasing like going into them and doing video and take measurements and stuff for hobby/"fun." I have done some storm chasing. Nothing involving hurricanes except the ones that came to me. Just wondered if anyone does that on here?

UKchaser does and we've had other teams who have chased hurricanes. One team was in Biloxi or Gulfport for Katrina, guys with a chasing website but I don't have the link. You can search to turn up the threads.

Here's a web site:

I'm a news shooter/chaser. I do "Wars and Weather" as I tell people. Got started after coming back from Iraq in '03 and hooking up with the UKWW guys on Isabel in VA Beach (ChaserUK was there). (I've had my chase threads there ever since)

Blogged Katrina at http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk (front page, scroll down for link)

Also have images at my own web site, http://www.jwbartlett.com

I tend to hang around longer than most in the area as well. I guess I'm sort of Mr. Aftermath. For the record...Katrina beat the fall of Baghdad hands down for the surreal.

There were a number of people out on Katrina, and frankly, I'm suprised no one got hurt. Some of those surge areas were a rouge wave away from a "snatch and drown" scenario. I'm USCG AUX, I take wave action very seriously. We almost got smoked by debris off an office building in Mobile. Very close hit from a 2x6 from scaffolding on the 15th floor.

She was truely the big one.

I chased back in the 70's before I had kids. It was scary and fun at the same time. I drove an older ford. It was built like a tank. I'd try to position myself on the weaker side within a short distance of where landfall was expected and then try and intercept the eye. I did this on interstate highways away from any risk of flooding......MGC

I did it.....but, in NE. Doesn't quite count as much. We don't tend to get the big ones up there.
