OK, fine ... and we're free to say his forecast is irresponsible.

What's your beef?

The beef is simple. If it is an irresponsible forecast, then what is a responsible forecast? Should he just fall in line and not express his opinion? If a Cat. 1 storm forecast is irresponsible does that mean that the only responsible forecast is a Cat. 5?
OR, does that mean in our 'sue everyone' society that somehow the weather man is 'responsible' for whatever happens.

the way it's looking... he may be EXACTLY right...

Most of the general population does not log in to Storm2k or any other weather related site. They depend on the news to find out whats going to happen. People watch and see that a Cat 1 is coming 4 DAYS OUT. Guess what most do when they see that.... not much.

I don't think anyone here suggested that the news should say Cat 5 every time. What they should be broadcasting is that there will be a Cat 3 approaching the coast within 3-4 days and, based it's interaction with a cold front, everyone in the potential strike area should monitor it's progress. That is a more prudent approach and let's people know that nothing is set in stone just yet.

Look at Charley. Charley went from Cat 2 to Cat 4 within the timeframe of one advisory period. It also made that dreaded turn into the coast within that period.

A perfect example of prudent broadcasting to the general public.... watch Max Mayfield's Update on now. He clearly states the uncertainty of track and intensity. He stressed that the possibility is there for Wilma to become a categoty 5 within the next 24 hours. A cat 2-3-4 is expected to approach the coast. The is too much uncertanty to know yet.

Perhaps I should have said "premature" rather than "irresponsible." Point was with a graphic that has a number one on it, folks may interpret that as more of a certainty than it is at this stage in the game....sometimes people see but don't listen as closely as the members here...it was only an observation...
