Guess who will still pay to collect the data if they "privatize" the weather service: the taxpayers will. We'll still pay to launch satellites, and to buy hurricane hunter planes, and to create computer models. But now, in addition, we'll have to pay to retrieve the data that we already paid to collect. It's thievery is all this is.
And we'll see a lot more of the hype-building slackuweather forecast tracks that always seem to target major metro areas until the actual landfall point is painfully obvious.
I HATE EVIL POLITICIANS. AND SANTORUM IS ONE OF THE WORST!

maybe but seems to me that NWS has been pretty good about keeping us posted on the weather. Not sure it would be benefical to the public if we had to pay Accuweather to get our info when we already paid for it w/taxes. I don't think we would get all those weather maps and photo's we do now. Many people living on a budget already won't buy into this and may not be prepared to make plans or evacuate in time.

In the interest of keeping politics out of this forum, I won't say what I think of this comment.
feel free... we're all intitled to our opinions.
You're very right Jax.
While I don't get the scare of privitization because socialism and government control seems to be ingrained in people's heads now, I do see this as one of the LAST things the government should stop to fund.
It really makes no sense the pork they add to bills like sending 500 million to Alaska for a fish painted on their plane, yet cut something the public needs.
If we lived with a more responsibile government, I would support these NHC cuts and fully privitize this sector, but it seems we don't have one.

AccuWX has got to be having an absolute fit that the NHC has decided to do news confrences and include the emergency managers for the areas potentially affected.
Their argument now will be that the NHC is competing with them for paid air time for updates on these channels...
The truth is they are fighting an uphill battle. I want to hear it from the horses mouth not the horses you know what.
