I wanna make a statement

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Thu Oct 20, 2005 6:45 pm

I wanna take a second to explain something..

I am not a "wishcaster" or a doom and gloomer". I am an analytical storm enthusiast :)

I do not "want" a direct hit here. I am completely fascinated by what the storms can do. I like to hear the howl of the winds, and the pictures I see of the damage {as bad as they look} often leave me fascinated wondering "how on earth could 1 big wind do all that"

I did go through 3 strong hurricanes last year and while 1 of them did scare me half to death, it did not make me lessen my fascination to the power of a hurricane.

I do not continue to say "It all depends how far north.." because I'm wishing for it to go a certain way. I am a person with a very high IQ score who particularly likes to analyze the possibilities.

All of you may also remember how I was "wishing" {as you'd all call it} Jeanne here last year and ya'll rode it off till you finally saw Jeanne make the loop and come right back this way.

Anyway.. All I am trying to say is.. We {myself included} are all excited, we are all running on high adrenaline, wanting this storm to finally come and go.

Please bear with me and anyone else who may feel the way I do and let us tell you what we believe "could" happen, even if you disagree. If you do disagree, please do it in a respectful manner. None of this "doom and gloom, -removed- it your way" talk.

{jumps off soapbox}

Thank you very much :)

John, I want to take a moment to applaud your post and wholeheartedly agree. The idea that someone could "wish" a tropical cyclone to their location is in my view assinine (sp). I understand your interest in tropical weather and I appreciate your candidness and your analysis. I feel that the tone around S2K has become very hostile of late and really needs to be toned down. I believe that calling someone a "wish---caster" should be equal to cursing someone. I wish that there was a zero tolerance policy for such slanderous and offensive name calling. I understand that some newbies may not understand the offensive nature of such terms but if after warning a member continues to insult poster's then that member should be suspended.

I just wanted to vent a little and encourage you to continue your forecasts and analysis. The whole point of Talkin Tropics is for AMATURE weather enthusists to discuss and predict the weather. If someone cannot handle the AMATURE part then they need to go to the pro met section or depend on TWC.

JMHO,
Tim

No problem. It does gets very "Revenge of the Nerds" here at times. Ignore it.

Impossible to believe after the last few years that there's a wishcaster left in the Atlantic basin. Except that kid near Tampa who needs a hurricane for his school project. And he's upfront about it.

I agree with you and your thoughts. I posted this earlier today that speaks to part of what you are thinking.

I think that all of the pro mets do an outstanding job of applying their educated skills to their jobs. The computer models used in developing the forcast that are furnished to the public are important tools to the forcasters. What becomes frustrating to the forcasters and trickles down to the public is the delay in the flow of new information. I think that it's only fair to observe that when the storm dynamics are stagnant that the flow of new forcast information also becomes stagnant. The professional meteorologist will only forcast what his tools, training and experience dictate.

It is frustrating for the public to have stagnant information relative to life altering weather events. We have become an information hungry and driven society. I am sure it is even more frustrating for these weather professionals not to be able to provide a continous flow of factual information.

In the case of Wilma, the storm has gone from a minor tropical storm to the most significant Atlantic tropical cyclone (meteorlogically) in history in a 36 hour period. Now we have a storm that is not performing as was anticipated. The information is not fresh and stimulating but is now rather boring.

The watching of and waiting for these storms stimulates our senses as long as something is happening. When the dynamics slow down we loose interest. DON'T !!

What I hear the mets say is this: Do not turn your back on this storm. Make and complete your plans now. When Wilma begins to move toward Florida the movement will be sudden, deliberate and things will change over a matter of hours, not days. Wilma is at this point like a snake in the grass waiting to strike and when she does it may be deadly.

Just my thoughts and ramblings. Be smart. Be safe.

Oh, that's good! The board software now changes the word <<banned word>> to "wonderful forecaster" automatically! Probably prevent some bloodshed.

Bypassing the word censors is also a way to earn a 3 day vacation from the board as well ;-)

I guess in some way shape or form, a "wishcaster" is not a bad thing based on the word sensor

Sincerely apologize. You know I meant no harm and won't do that again, even for illustration purposes.
