Sure hope that these forecasts come to fruition!

IMO, the longer it takes the more chance for it to die out a lot and/or take a different track.

Maybe I am -removed- but I get the feeling that when all is said and done this will hardly be the story we feared 24-48 hours ago. 8-)

Think again.

Question about a few events in Palm Beach County:

The Benjamin School is/was scheduled to have a college fair Monday evening for their students. The school is closed today in anticipation of the hurricane. The website says they are hoping the college fair will still take place on Monday, however if we're to be hit Monday afternoon, I have to wonder if there will be another update, or if anyone has heard anything different?

Additionally, the Palm Beach County College Night at the S. Florida Fairgrounds is scheduled to happen Tuesday night. The decision as to whether or not that will still take place will be made this afternoon from what I'm told.

Just of note:

The NHC has fully reinstalled their hurricane panels. They had them down if not fully, but partially as of last week. I usually put mine up if they put theirs up. BUT, I really don't feel like it. Complacency at it's best here.

Who told me? Noone. I just saw them yesterday on my home from Kendall on the Turnpike. As far as who put them up? I would guess is wasn't Max. Perhaps Avila?

Speaking of panels... Max mentioned having his wife putting theirs on their home in Kendall as well. If anyone goes by that..

LOL, jp - don't worry. Hubby said that because he put ours up yesterday we'll end up getting nothing

We figured better to be safe than sorry, but it is telling, IMO, when the NHC is shuttered, Max is shuttering, and the FEMA Director is shuttering.....

Palm Beach county school info

Hurricane Wilma Announcement #2 - 10/21/05 (3:00 PM)

Palm Beach County school officials say a decision will be made tomorrow (Saturday) regarding the operation of schools on Monday. The decision will be based on information supplied by the county Emergency Operations Center's 11:15 a.m. hurricane update from the National Hurricane Center. Parents and employees should monitor the local media; The District's TV station, Channel 19 (Adelphia); this Web site or the hotline (561) 357-7500 or (866) 930-6001 toll free from south county and the Glades.

This is what I figure too, I put our shutters up because we never get -anything- when I do, so I made sure to put them up asap (We didn't put shutters up for Katrina, ugh)

I haven't heard about Broward, but I did here that Miami-Dade will make a decision today at 1pm. Seems like most decisions are coming in today for the FL east coast. Courts are closed on Monday in Miami, so my bet would be that schools will be too.

shutters going up here today

#140 Postby Weatherboy1 » Sat Oct 22, 2005 6:30 am

well, I put off the decision as long as possible to see exactly how much time Wilma was going to spend over the Yucatan (and therefore, how weak she'd get), whether her exact track would change, etc. But here in Jupiter, I'll be putting the shutters up for the first time on the house we moved into in November 2004. Much more of a pain than our last place because this house is two stories, not one, and has more windows. Ugh. My thinking is that while SHIPS weaknes Wilma a lot before landfall, the GFDL really doesn't, the NHC seems to be thinking this will be a Cat 2 or strong 1 when it reaches SW FL and since it will be moving fast, it won't weaken much over land before exiting the coast. And the point of exit appears to be only 20 miles or so north of Jupiter. Moreover, in this fast-moving storm, being on the SW side of the circulation is bad -- since Wilma will likely be moving 20 mph or so and accelerating to the NE, the storm movement should increase the wind impact. After all, not only will you have potentially 80 mph or so SW winds ... you also have 20 mph of storm movement to add to them. And there's always the possibility she strenghtens more over the SE Gulf where waters aren't as warm as in the NW Carib, but warm enough to add 10, 15 or 20 mph to the storm if she moves slowly enough.

Bottom line: Better safe than sorry.
