A Hurricane Theory

#1 Postby Tampa Bay Hurricane » Fri Oct 21, 2005 6:17 pm

A hurricane that moves around landmasses- Ivan around Jamacia-
Comes very close to hitting but then the eye wall moves along the
coast.

I believe this phenomenon occurs during times of weak/no steering.
It's like they have a mind of their own. I think it involves the eye
moving/staying over an area most conducive to its thriving.

Regarding Wilma- if there were steering and a stronger ridge it would have barrelled totally into the central Yucatan Peninsula Yesterday.

So Given:
1. Little or no steering
2. A very intense storm

We see this phenomenon.

Remember I am a total amateur so this is no where
near professional. Thoughts and comments welcome on my newbie theory.

Hurricanes are not conscious beings.

That said, perhaps when there are no steering currents, friction from land interaction tends to push them offshore.

Well, the thing with Ivan was that it had some decent steering at the time. I think it was moving at about 5-10 mph. Am I wrong?

I believe the path of less resistance is why sometimes canes shy from making landfall and scraping instead the coast. I will google up "Land Interaction" to find some data.

So it might have been friction as well as enhanced conduciveness?
