What about the fact that here in Sarasota I have all the birds that are usually in my backyard? They're making just as much noise as usual. What does that say?

I thought the general consensus was that this will be a south florida event not Tampa, Sarasota, Bradenton etc..

It is. But some folks here refuse to believe it. They're down to using the birds as supporting evidence. :D

It says that people here can be overly dramtic

Birds are chirping here. Squirrels are out running around. And my dogs are running around like maniacs. What do I think that all of this means? Nothing. :D

Naples is ominously quiet but my pets are still acting OK eve with the car carriers out and all thepacking going on. The Yorkie has been napping all morning and the cat is into everything.

Speaking of pets-I don't know if I posted this but I called the vet to see about getting tranqualizers especially for the cat and he suggested Benadryl 1mg per lb. I got the childrens liquid and the pharmacist was nice enough to throw in an oral syringe and calculated 2 ml per 5lb. If you try this just get the antihistamine type-no other ingredients. Hope I don't kill them so I'll error on the side of caution and give them a little less than called for. Hope this helps those that are evacuating with nervous pets.

If you do the tablets. 1/4 tab per 5 lbs (Yorkie) and 1/2 tab for cat (9lbs).

Guess what I am not being overly dramatic. I have the possibilty of a hurricane coming here. I have property but more importantly I have young children to protect...... I was making an observation of something.

The windfield with Wilma is huge. The effects will be felt well
away from the center. The landfall location will get the core of
winds, but weaker yet still damaging tropical storm force winds will
extend out far from the center impacting places like Orlando,
Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, etc.

My hubby heard on the radio that large fish were found in a marina in Islamorada - these are fish that weren't supposed to be in that close to shore unless they were on a hook ;) Makes me wonder about animals - they have a sense of what's coming....

If the fish were able to tell what was coming they'd head for deeper water, not shallower.

Sun is out here, hot and very humid, dead calm on the lake except for the normal wakeboaders and waverunners. Birds are out, but no brown pelicans seeking shelter here yet. :D

complete silence

#51 Postby muddyflorida » Sat Oct 22, 2005 11:00 am

My husband thinks I am going crazy but weird things are happening here in Pinellas county also.

For one, there is complete silence (other then the guy mowing his lawn down the street), not a bird to be heard.

Another weird thing was I found this lizard snake like thing drowning in my pool. I was too late to save him but I did a google search and he was a blue tailed skink. They are considered an indangered species according to some Florida amphibian/reptile website. Also, they are native to Polk County and they hate water.

Seems odd that the poor guy ended up in my pool this morning. My husband said that I was crazy because I sugested that it could be because of the barametric pressure being low and it affected him some how and made him decide to commit suicide in my pool.

This comming from a guy who thinks NASCAR is a sport and bowling is not!

Would make sense, although I would think they'd be swimming in a direction to get away from the storm too. I don't know, I didn't hear it, so I can't tell ya what it was about for sure

There's a creepy silence out here on Sanibel. It's not just psychosomatic either. I went out to check it out after reading this thread and first saw no birds or nothing for the first few minutes, but then I saw a Red Belly who chirped and a Kingfisher fly by. Still, there are less birds than usual. Yesterday we had flocks of Egrets, Ibises, and Herons wading in the pools in the yard. Today not a one to be found. Only a lone Anhinga drying his wings on an up-sticking root by the pond. There are no birds in the sky. Sanibel always has birds in the sky.

Yesterday I checked out the parrots. Two days before Charley the Blue and Gold Macaw hung upside-down and froze with the craziest stare and wide eyes. Never seen him do that before or since. Before Katrina the Cockatoo was licking the side of the cage. This bird always comes over to play. It had no interest - just licking the bar of the cage. Yesterday it was doing it again. For Katrina it licked the NW side of the cage. Katrina went NW from us. Yesterday it was licking the NE side of the cage and wouldn't pay attention to me.

A man told me the dolphins are schooling and swimming slowly in packs off Sanibel...

Super quiet here in new port richey. Hot, humid and cloudy. Some people keep saying just south florida. Remember this system is large and tropical storm winds with rain will be well from the center. Possible even more spread if it becomes extratropical. Although its landfalling in S florida, its a huge system not a point. I thought people on here were smarter and knew that. Guess we are all still learning a hurricane isnt a point. lol
