Big Question: Shutters in Palm Beach County?
I am in Jupiter and I believe I understand the potential of this. But we had nothing from Frances with no boards and nothing hit the boards during Jeanne. I started to board up and said the hell with it. How many of you are saying the same thing due to just being sick of this. I know about the increased risk of tornados, but will my boards really make a difference at that point. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated b/c last year storms are making feel safe right now.

there was some discussion on this last night. IIRC, Derick indicated that the winds down here in wpb were magnitudes less than wat we saw in frances. I'm really worried about the dammage that may be coming down on us.
I'm also worried about everyone around us who hasn't bothered to secure the pots and chairs and other stuff around their houses.

The local government here was advised ~12:30 today that Boynton Beach (here in southern Palm Beach County) can experience sustained winds in the low- 90 mph range between 11 and noon tomorrow. The winds can begin to reach the 40 mph range by 2:30 a.m., increase to the highest force mid-day, and drop back into the low-40 mph range after 5 p.m. That is definitely stronger than Frances or Jeanne last year. Tornado chances are much higher than last time, as well. PUT SHUTTERS UP WHILE YOU HAVE A CHANCE!

Up until this morning, I wasn't 100% sure, though I was leaning toward putting them up. We did put them up today. Three things convinced me to put them up:
1) PBC EOC said it would be worse than Frances. Enough said. That was the biggest factor.
2) Didn't want the insurance company to deny my claim if something did happen to the house.
3) I didn't have anywhere else to put them. We had them on the side porch, under cover, in a screened in area, but they would have flown all over the place in 80-90 mph winds. So, seemed like the windows were the best place to keep them.
If I were you, I would put them up.

I think the better question is "why not put them up?"
With the subtleties of individual hurricane tracks, it's impossible to say for sure what exact windspeeds you'll see. My advise would be to just put them up because if you don't need them, thats awesome, but if you don't put them up and it turns out you should have...you're gonna get screwed by insurance.

Absolutely 100% correct!
Had a friend who took a hit last year in Stuart with Francis, she decided to leave the shutters down on a hew house she purchased in 2003. Don’t want to mention the name of the insurer but they nailed her for not putting up her shutters and refused to pay her claims. She took them to court and lost so she got stuck with paying all damages herself, then paying attorney fees and other court costs, and had tp pay much higher premiums this year of course.
Here in Lantana (Greenacres) many home owners were just getting started late this afternoon. The wife and I took a walk and it now looks like about 65% or more of the homes in the GL community we live in are now fully shuttered.
