Thanks Stewart (Brent)

for being on duty -- I have a hunch it will make landfall at a low
cat 3 and much slower then anticipated --hopefully not much slower
but #18 keeps popping up around me and I am hoping it doesn't get
to be that slow (18mph speed)

Thanks you guys for keeping us newbies and nervous lurkers informed !

Hmmmm almost a cat3 now, and I don't see any weakening before landfall. And still heading towards the Keys or just up to the North. Anyway, with this large eye, a lot of people will be hit by the eyewall I think. Some bad news for Florida I'm afraid

Was just making my last run outside for last minute junk....I saw 2 businesses boarded up on my 10 mile drive here in Broward. One sub shop and a gas station.

It's a 113.85mph surface wind, I checked it to makes sure. Either way, it'll be a Cat 3 shortly if it isn't already.

Don't forget...this cat 3 (maybe) storm will be passing over an area with the most stringent building codes in the country...you can't compare Rita and Katrina's damage to potential damage down here. Their codes up there were not anywhere near what they are down here. Although, don't get me wrong...there will be some more damage than people expect down here if those winds do occur over the metro areas.

From the current look of this storm (noticeably strengthening) and the fact that no dry air is being entrained, and that shear doesn't seem to be having much effect on the core, I've gotta say it.

Category 3 now looks likely for landfall. At this point, I don't think we can rule out category 4.

I heard that quite a few people didn't even board up their windows. Big mistake.

A lot of people are going to be caught off-guard. I heard a TON of people on the news say they weren't evacuating because it was "only going to be a Cat 1 or 2"

Is there more of a powerfull storm surge with a fast appoaching storm compared to a slow mover....?

True for the metro areas, but areas like Port Charlotte have large mobile home and winnebago parks.
