First rain burst and stopped after a minute. Winds still only 10mph to calm.

Took blades off fan on porch.

Am waiting to decide. Still have an hour or two to get off.

Thunder in distance.

Local weather broadcast showed wind graph. Sanibel expected to get 50-74mph winds. Everglades City area 100-125mph. Said Sanibel should have offshore winds and little surge.

I just left my apartment in the Moorings, near the Naples coast. I am now located in the Collier County Government building. It is one of the strongest structures in SW Florida. I'm on the 3rd floor, and people, it's surreal. The commisioners are seriously in shock and awe. TWC is all over the place. Mike Bettes and Stephanie Abrams are now both in Naples. The two Florida State senators that represent Collier County are right beside me in their offices with their children and families. My dad is over in a meeting for the expected wipe out of many roads in the area.

The mayor of Naples is now at the Collier Governmnet Center along with the Marco Island Mayor, and the Everglades City Mayor. The FBI are also here, they expect the arrival of the President in the next few days. The US Senator Connie Mack is also down in this building. There are alot of important people down here, and it's really crazy, the commisioners are trying to figure out what to do.

They are now almost certain of a direct landfall over Naples/Marco Island in the next 16 hours. There is internet and generators that are almost garunteed here, i'll be able to keep up posts and information connections out to you guys.

God Bless us, and all of our evacuees,
Kevin Cho

Thanks Kevin! Please keep the updates coming. We're boarded up and hunkered down in North Naples. Your info is much more useful that what we're seeing on CNN or the local news.

In fact while taking the dogs for a walk minutes ago I could hear the sound of a circular saw in the backgroung.. people are still boarding up. They hear Major and they Freak..as they should..lol Anyways.. Glad you got moved Kevin..Wow the clouds are racing by outside and from a few directions..lol Tornadic alrighty..Breeze feels good for a next couple hours..Then it's Hunker time..

Hi Y'all,

Checking in from Orlando...

Not easy being this far away from home wondering what's going on and what is yet to come. We had some very severe weather here from about 7-9:00PM as some of the outer bands made their way across the area.

My connection is not very good so I will say good night...

I have all of you in my prayers...be safe my friends,

Linda

PS Kevin...thank you so much for the most recent update....which are even more important to me now that I'm so far away from home!

Keep checking when you can. I'm still here in North Naples and will post as much info as I can for as long as I can. So far, things are pretty calm, I just took the dogs out for a quick pee and it was starting to rain but the winds weren't strong. I have the joint Ch 2- 7 hurricane coverage on.

Hope you get some sleep tonight. I don't think I will :(

Decided to stay. Local weatherman has put Sanibel on left edge of cone.

They are saying no surge here due to east winds on the left side of the storm.

Warm and breezy here now but no real winds yet. Unusually warm light rain now.

Official wind chart expects 50-74mph winds here...

Thanks Kevin. Gosh I hadn't thought about the Prez and other dignitaries coming to this area butit makes sense. What an experience you must be having to actually live history with "the big boys".

Things are quiet here in Ft. Myers. We just went out for a short walk around the motel and it is a little breezy but nothing to indicate what may be coming-a MAJOR hurricane.

Is anyone else unimpressed with the joint NBC/ABC simulcast? They obviously have not read this board. Are convinced it will go into the 10,000 islands (good if it verifies) and will remain a Cat 3 through landfall (doubtful?). Their surge numbers don't correspond with the NHC, etc., etc. Don't mean to bash them but it seems that since they called the Charlie turn they are a little full of themselves. Jumped on the GDFL as if it were the bible and haven't moved. Will be anxious to see all of the 00Z runs. Don't get me wrong, I hope they are dead on!

Off to get a little sleep during the calm before the storm (literally) Stay safe everyone. Sanible, what did you decide? Stay or go?

Later...Lynn

Hi All,
Just dawned on me that national media is in Everglades City. I can't begin to find the words to describe how I feel right now. Like I said, I grew up there and I still own a little house(fishing shack) there. It's really tearing my heart out to think what might happen there.......

got in at 1 yesterday, spent the day today putting up shutters, tying the boat down, and moving things.

we're gonna ride it out here in bonita... we had a room booked up by the airport but we have shutters up and are in a newer home (2001), on the main level (bottom floor is 5-6 ft above sea level, main level is 17 feet above sea level.

hopefully we'll end up with a negative surge but worse case scenario we will get some water close to the house.

you all take care.... i need to take a nap.

Kevin_Cho wrote:Hey everyone, update from my location: THE COLLIER COUNTY EOC.

Winds nearing tropical storm force winds. For a few minutes Collier County officials were almost cheering when they saw the radar/IR and Watervapor imagery showing the storm maybe taking a more turn to the south, however, with the last few minutes and new frames have coe in, they see the storm has not only gotten back on NHC track, but now may be north of it slightly, making it even worse than before.

Winds approaching Tropical Storm force Coastal Collier County. Moderate amounts of rainfall at the moment. It's pretty comfortable sitting here 3 floors up on an 8 story building that's supposodly one of the safest in the state, with an almost limitless supply of free food and water plus 2 florida state senators, 1 US Senator, and FBI agents awaiting the arrival of the Presidnet in the next 48 hours...also almost garunteed power and internet service here in the Government Center as they generators and such, so it looks like i'll be here the whole storm to bring live updates.

The Bottom Line:
Lee/Collier Counties need to brace for a direct hit from this storm, a strong category 3 at landfall very likely with winds probably around 120 to possibly 130 at landfall.

Thanks for the update. My husband is on duty at station 72 in Golden Gate, I am worried about them. Pressure is dropping once again... Winds are really picking up in S. Ft. Myers.

So far, not as bad as I thought it would be up here on Sanibel.

We have gusts up to 50-60mph from ESE. Lulls are around 20-25mph.

Rain is small drop and blowing in sheets. I expected deluge-type rain from the way Wilma looked.

Edit:

Winds have picked up substantially since I wrote this...

Hi all, just woke up to sounds that made me wonder if a train was running past my bedroom window at 70MPH. Power is flickering, the battery backup has kicked in a few times already and I expect if the winds keep up I will lose power soon here in North Naples. I posted some pics earlier today on my website and will update later (power permitting) with the photos last night and early this morning.

Be safe everyone!

The NWS radar over the last hour shows the turn to the NE with Everglades city as the target, but the wide eyewall headed for Naples, both places getting smacked by the outer eyewall about now. (The eyewall is large enough to stretch from Everglades city across to Miami, the ring of gloom and doom and dark despair.)

Keep safe. everyone.

Good tropical storm here. They say top gusts are 60mph - but I KNOW the last gusts on the porch that made me hang onto the rail were fringing on hurricane force.

Hardest vibrations of the house now. Venetian blinds are making noises inside the house.

There's a strong core wall 10 miles south of the island.

Can't believe we still have power (Charley cleared out all the trees that would have fallen on the lines).

Should get light here in about 40 minutes...

Power keeps cutting off.

House is shaking like earthquake. We are on stilts so it exaggerates the shimmy. Estimate hurricane gusts here.

NW side worst side here.

Daylight now.

All OK. Good hard TS here now.

Signing off.

We are doing good here in Port Charlotte also, just have some major gusts coming in for the past hour! Can't wait till it's over.
