Man, we've heard this phrase way too many times today.

24hours ago on Storm2k they were saying that everyone was underprepared and wasn't taking this seriously.
People were expecting a CAT 2 and were becoming complacant about it. Ok it intensified just before landfall but if you had read Storm 2k and other weather boards people were given adequate warning. Thats why the area was under a mandatory evacuation! People have to take these seriously!

Some of us have been complaining about this for decades.
Human nature really doesn't change.
People always think the winds they are in are worse than they are. Reporters in 50 mph sustained winds often think they are in sustained hurricane force winds. Then they are really surprised when they get into the hurricane force winds.
The eye often tricks the reporters into thinking everything is over.
People underestimate how long the intense winds last for. Even though this particular system is moving fast two hours in a hurricane feels like four and four feels like eight.

The media is doing the public a huge injustice out "playing" in the
hurricanes.
Keep showing the reel of CNN's Miles "something" freaking out early
this morning, fear in his voice, pleading for the studio to tell him
"how much longer will it be like this"
Note to Miles, you wanted to be in the middle of a hurricane, you got it.
Shut up and enjoy.

I was really troubled by the reporters that stayed on Key West. Their presence there probably leads people to think that it can't be all that bad so why not stay. I think they were just very lucky this time.

Wilma is moving so fast, that I don't think it will have time to build up a lot of water.

The old adage, "Do as I say, not as I do" applies to hurricanes as well.
When getting the story, being in harms way, and posting live reports from the eyewall of the hurricane is something that the networks feel is worth the risk, so too do many people.
In my mind, mandatory evacuation should include all interests other than law enforcement and emergency personnel. That includes the media.
And folks will not forget the nightmareish episodes of evacuations from Galveston inland to Houston recently...so when they weigh the option of staying or leaving, they also see those graphic details in their minds. Out of gas, miserable conditions, and even deaths on the way out of town.
It will be interesting what changes might be forthcoming from FEMA, law enforcement, and even local preparedness efforts for next year and beyond.

Reporters staying in a hurricane need to realize something. It only makes them look stupid to stand out in those winds and say , "Don't go out in this. It's too dangerous." I heard one reporter this morning say, "If you live in a boat you don't need to stay in it". Of course, they said this in the middle of the hurricane.... and I would venture to say the people who live in boats were smarter than that and left way before the hurricane struck.
The people who live in South Florida are used to hurricanes coming through. They know better than anyone that it is the "price you pay for paradise". They also know not to stand outside in it and wonder when it's going to stop.
At least Shep's not out there losing his hat this time!
