#1 Postby Ivanhater » Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:03 pm

hey fellow storm2k members....im writing an english paper for english 102, and im writing on the evacuation of new orleans for katrina, im gonna put when max mayfield called mayor nagan on the phone and when he started to evacuate....my side is the local governemnt should have been better prepared and i need to know the time between the call and when he started to evacuate, and when mississippi started evacuating, im putting more in about the florida evacuations in 2004 and this year and comparing it, so if there is any new orleans or mississppi folks on , the info would be great...thanks! :)

You should try using Google News. Or taking a trip to your library and looking through the papers. Something tells me the point of your assignment was not to have everyone else do it for you! You're going to need sources anyway, and since it's your assignment, you should be the one to find them.

I was watching the live news feeds and I saw all of this, but I"m not sure exactly how it went down. I do remember that Mayfield called him maybe Thursday night or Friday, and I believe it was Thurs p.m., and that it wasn't until Sunday that Nagin could call for mandatory evacs. There were voluntary ones before that. BUT what you need to research is why he could not call for mandatory evacs until when he did. The reasons for this are complicated. From what I understand, he could have been sued for calling for mandatory evacs if it had turned out they weren't necessary after the fact. The shelters in NO weren't, I believe, Red Cross approved (you should check on this) because they weren't on high enough ground, and in order to be able to order an evac, you need to make sure there are enough shelters available to take in the people. Nagin was saying since Friday in the footage I saw that the Superdome would be a shelter of last resort, that it would not be comfortable and that it could take days for help to get to people who don't leave the city. I remember also that even though Nagin could not say "evacuate" himself, the TV station had a parade of guest speakers who urged residents to leave town as early as Friday and that continued all weekend. There were ministers, emergency managers, former mayors, etc. So I think they were hoping that the viewing public would get the message even though the mayor's hands were somewhat tied at that point.

Good luck with your paper! You might check with NBC Channel 4 in New Orleans for their archival footage that supports all of this.

I edited the post, I think Mayfield may have called him on Thurs p.m. and the news appearance by Nagin on Ch. 4 was on Friday p.m. You can check with them. It was not a press conference, it was just him sitting down with the moderators and the meteorologist. When he was interviewed, he mentioned getting a call from "this Mayfield guy at NHC" and it seemed that he didn't know who this was at the time. It also seemed to me that he didn't really grasp the immediate gravity of the situation (or was choosing not to) until Mayfield called him with the bad news. Remember, the NHC sent out a really scary bulletin that essentially said get out of the way of this storm or die.

I'd verify all the timing and details, though. I was watching and not taking notes.

I had the feed on constantly from Friday on. It was fascinating to see it all unfold.

Max Mayfield just called the Mayor and said this is the "real Deal" -- get everybody out...they will be commandeering RTA buses to get people out..asking Amtrak to run special trains...they will try to get all poor out...

Just heard on NO channel 4 that the head of NHC called the mayor of New Orleans telling him that this is the real deal and they expect a direct hit on NO. The mayor said his family will be on an airplane first thing in AM and is advising everyone to evacuate.

Hey, this was history in the making. It was a convergence and collision between politics and scientists and mother nature -- something that is very fascinating and will be for the history books and an event that will be debated for a long time to come.

To be honest, it's stuff like this that makes me interested in this site more than analyzing storm data. It's really a bigger subject than just weather.
